Eeek. After reading this I'm thinking I'll need to get my two girls fixed ASAP if we get the townhouse we've just applied on to rent. We've been putting it off for financial reasons as well.
Right now we live in an apartment so the cats escaping just means the hallway which will only cause an irritated human to chase them back into the apartment. Though they have no interest in doing this and have never done it the great wide world might hold more appeal. Especially if there's a male cat sniffing around.

As for a kitten I'd love to take one but I know my husband won't agree. Not with our own baby on the way.

You guys don't know how thrilled I am to know my "grand-kitties" (right, M?) will be going to good homes.

Now we just have to wait to see how many o'the little darlings will make a showing.

He feels it would be hypocritical to give up Murphey due to the costs of his illness but then take on the costs of a new kitten (shots, fixing, etc).
