of computers and memes

Feb 10, 2004 11:50

First of all, I'll do the high school meme that I got from gamiila and automatedalice_:

School and Year you graduated:
Newark Valley High School, Newark Valley, NY, 1974 (yep, it's my 30 year H.S. reunion this year!)

Number of people in your graduating class:
138 - it was approx. 500 kids, grades 9 through 12.

Nickname in high school?
Mostly "Julie", sometimes "Jules" by my close friends.

Sport you were into?
Uh, sports?? I was a band person.

Had a circle of friends?
Yep - we mostly hung out in the band room.

Best subject?
Hmm - English, social studies, music, French and German. I graduated 2nd in my class, actually.

Worst subject?
Well, it had been math in junior high - definitely was chemistry in high school. I did better in math in H.S., and better yet again at it in college, which was good for a computer science major lol! Thank God they stole the chemistry regents the year I was supposed to take it, or I would have failed it. My husband and I laugh now, because he is a chemist. Avoided physics and calculus in H.S. by taking an extra foreign language (German) my junior and senior years.

A teacher you owe life lessons to?
Didn't have a teacher from whom I learned any life lessons, sad to say.

Describe in one word...
Freshman (year 9): studying
Sophomore (year 10): studying
Junior (year 11): love
Senior (year 12): angst

Your best friend was?
Carol and Marilyn, who I had known since 3rd grade - still in touch with Marilyn, not in a while for Carol.

Worst friend?
Just the jocks and the cheerleaders.

Cafeteria food sucked?
It wasn't so bad, from what I recall.

Wore uniforms?
No.

How was the prom?
Well, I went three years running - 10th grade with a friend, 11th grade with my sweetie, and 12th grade with a friend. I'd say 12th grade was the best - too angsty in 11th grade, too young/naive in 10th.

Who were the prom king and queen?
Polly Bateman and Dave Gregrow junior year. Jim Corwin (my first real crush from 6th grade and a football star) and Pam, his girlfriend (a cheerleader, naturally lol!) senior year.

Any achievements?
Graduated as salutatorian, made All-County Band four years running, and made Area All-State Band my senior year. On a whole host of clubs and publications throughout high school.

Were you popular?
Well, not really. I was tight with my friends, but with a reputation as a nerd/geek and a band room person, not really popular.

Best song that reminds you of high school?
Anything from "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" by Jethro Tull, although "Precious and Few" and "Colour My World" were prom themes. Our senior class theme was "We May Never Pass This Way Again" by Seals and Croft.

My computer is finally really functioning again - the Dell tech came yesterday to swap out my broken CD drive, so I am able to upload the software I need to get going again with the new hard drive. Still some more to do.

Nan Dibble has started posting her latest installment in her "Old Blood" verse - it's here Blood Rites, and I am very excited about it. Still reading Barb's Necessary Evils, which is a fabulous story! I love her Spike and Buffy characterizations, and I'm enjoying her story line as well. I keep bursting out laughing at particular lines and passages, and I'm reading them to Ron as I go. Thanks for friending me back, Barb!

Sax lesson later today - and I am going to the Dance Flurry festival this weekend, with my friend Patricia. Should get in some great contra dancing, and I'm planning on some good workshops and jams as well. I've e-mailed Lise to hook up with her for a drink to catch up, and a lesson as well. She's teaching several of the workshops at Flurry. In case you're interested, here's her Big Bandemonium web site. She's my role model in music.

And thanks to everyone who encouraged me in my post-Damage ficlet. I posted it on Spike's Salvation forum yesterday, and got some nice feedback.

More later...
