Copied from The S'cubie Board:
I'm sorry to have to tell you all this, but Nan died yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, March 7) at Christ Hospital here in Cincinnati. Although she had not been feeling well for about a week, she thought it was a combination of the flu and over exertion. We had agreed that, between us, we would get her a doctor appointment on Monday, the 6th, but when I tried to call her that morning to make arrangement, she didn't answer. I learned from her neighbors that the emergency unit had taken her to the hospital, then that she was at Christ Hospital in Emergency. Because I'm not a relative, I couldn't learn any more until I had located her brother in New Jersey. He called early yesterday morning to let me know that her condition was critical, and that there would be an emergency surgery to try to save Nan's life (this was an intestinal problem previously unknown to any of us). The condition was too far advanced for medical team to help her. The hospital notified her brother, who had them call me, and I was at the hospital with Nan until the end. She lost consciousness shortly after arriving in the emergency room and was never fully conscious again. She was medicated, and the nurse believed that they had done all that they could to make her comfortable.
I'm sorry for communicating the news this way, but I couldn't think of any other way to reach all of you - and I knew you meant a great deal to Nan. I can post another message when I know what the arrangements will be, probably a memorial service here in Cincinnati and local interment. Things are very upset now, but I will try to check my email at least once in the evening. My address is MMCropper at cs.com
Stunned and sad; Nan was really the first person to welcome me into the Buffy Fandom.
She also wrote several pro SF works under the name Ansen Dibell, as well as the well known writing book, Plot.
Julia, so many wonderful stories left untold.
