I know the army took some stuff and used it. While I sometimes question how much we put it as to what we get out...there are stuff which maybe it was not used the way it was originally designed but its helping someone.
Which is exactly it. If they hadn't needed the radio antennas for the Space Program, it would have taken a lot longer--if ever--for someone to notice that you can cook a hamburger with microwave radiation. No microwave ovens. Super Glue wouldn't have been invented, and a by-product adhesive that doesn't stick would never have been made into post-it notes. The very computers we use are as good as they are because they needed them in the space program first. The benefits of the Space Program, other than the science which I will never conceed is worthless ;) are almost all secondary in nature. And our standard of living is much, much higher because of it. Something to remember the next time you use Velcro. :)
