Haven’t read Love at the Time of Cholera? Is it good? My friend sensanome taught me to never leave a book unfinished, but it literally took me 3 months to read One Hundred Years of Solitude. I lost the count of times I would set it aside and not be able to get back to it for weeks at a time - it's wonderfully written, but with imagery so succulent that it left syrupy aftertaste. Same was true for Memories of My Melancholy Whores. I am afraid to pick another one of his books only to be forced to break the “unfinished” rule.
