The Second Time.
Behind the high school is the football field where Junsu once strutted his stuff, the hero during football season, where his friends cheered him on from the bleachers.
It's not football season now, anyway. It's spring, and on the field there is a gathering of what look like birds- huge red ones with black heads. These mutant crows are laughing and talking as they sit in their folding chairs, but Mr. Han, the principal, has no problem being heard; he's at the podium on the makeshift stage, and he got the mike.
"One last thing before I dismiss you!" he booms. "I won't tell you not to throw your mortarboards at the end of the ceremony, I know from years of experience I might as well be talking to myself-"
Laughter, cheers, applause.
"-but I'm telling you to PICK THEM UP AND TURN THEM IN OR YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THEM!"
There are a few boos and some yells, Kim Jaejoong's the loudest.
Mr. Han gives them a final glaring look. "Young men and women, members of the Class of '92, I think I speak for the entire faculty when I say I'm proud of you. This concludes rehearsal, so...."
The rest is lost, amplification or no amplification the red crows rise in a gusty flap of nylon, and they fly. Tomorrow at noon they will fly for good; although the four crows laughing and grabassing their way towards the parking lot where Yunho's car is parked do not realize it, the childhood phase of their friendship is now only hours from the end.
They don't realize it, and that is probably just as well.
Junsu snatches Yoochun's mortarboard, slaps it on top of his own, and runs for the parking lot.
"Hey, asshole, give that back!" Yoochun yells, and then he snatches Jaejoong's.
Jaejoong squawks like a chicken and runs after Yoochun, laughing, but not before he snatches the mortarboard on Yunho's head. Changmin raises a bored eyebrow and runs along too.
So the four of them swoop across the grass and behind the bleachers, graduation robes billowing around their jeans. Junsu has two hats on his head, the tassels swinging in opposite directions.
Junsu is looking back as he runs, taunting Yoochun.
("Come on, Mr. Park, you run like a girl") and almost piles into Changmin, who has reached the parking lot first, and who is now looking at the glassed-in notice board by the north entrance.
Yoochun reaches Junsu, chest heaving as he catches his breath.
He looks resolutely at the grinning, unsuspecting Junsu. Yoochun grabs Junsu, bends him backward like a guy doing tango with some beautiful chick, and kisses him squarely on the mouth. Both mortarboards tumble off Junsu's head, and he screams in surprise.
"Bastard!" Junsu yells, rubbing frantically at his mouth....but he's starting to laugh, too.
Yoochun's an oddity-he'll go along quietly for weeks at a time, all is normal, and then he'll break out and do something nutso. Usually the nutso comes of after a couple of beers, but not this afternoon. Jaejoong's strangeness has probably rubbed off on him, Junsu decides.
"I've always wanted to do that, Jun-chan," Yoochun says greasily.
"Now you know how I really feel."
"Fucking bastard, if you gave me the syph, I'll kill you!"
Jaejoong arrives, snatches his mortarboard off the grass, and swats Junsu with it.
"There's grass stains on this," Jaejoong says.
"If I have to pay for it, I'll do a lot more than just kiss you, Jun-chan."
"Beautiful Jun-chan," Yunho says solemnly.
Junsu lets out a sound of indignation at being called a girl, or maybe being called a beautiful girl. He grabs the fucking bastard who just kissed him on the mouth, pulls him to the ground, and the two of them roll over and over in billows of red nylon.
Seniors in their school-red graduation gowns, rolling around, having fun.
Both mortarboards are cast off to one side and Yunho grabs them to keep them from getting crushed.
"Get off me!" Yoochun cries. "You're crushing me with your big-ass ASS! For God's sake, I can't breathe and mmmpppph-"
"Take that, you shithead. How you like being kissed now, huh?" A breathless Junsu puffs as he sits on top of Yoochun's chest, his mouth tingling from that kiss and his mind reeling; you just kissed your bestfriend with tongue ohmygodJunsuwhatiswrongwithyou.
It's the second time Yoochun tries to tell Junsu 'I Love You' and doesn't;
instead he kisses Junsu because he knows Junsu hears those three words anyway.
