While I agree that the unpaid traffic tickets=warrant is bullshit, and that bureaucratic red tape should not have taken this long to work through, none of those conditions actually sound like a bad idea to me. The problem is when any Joe Schmoe (including you, tickets excluded) can go in and buy 30 guns a month and then sell them to people who DO tick those boxes. That's the type of gun control laws I want--just to make it harder and less profitable for black market arms dealers to be the middle men ( ... )

That's nice, but you generally can't rely on arms dealers to worry about complying with the law. I can't find the investigation I was thinking of by this group (basically, they found that over 65% of online gun retailers will knowingly and willingly sell to someone they think can't meet those requirements), but here's some of their other investigations. The "Trace" and "Research" tabs also have more of what I'm talking about. Basically, it's not the gun owners that you can trust that you have to worry about. It's the ones who know that the profit they can make running guns on the black market is more than worth the risk of jail. All I'm talking about is making it harder and less profitable to do so, while trying to inconvenience actual Joe Schmoe as little as possible (without ridiculousness like waiting four months because of a fucking unpaid traffic ticket).

So long as we're talking about local brick and morter stores, no, we really don't. These are not people who want to lose their licenses, or their jobs, or their stores. Now if we're talking about Lord of War types who sell guns by the thousands, that's a different story.

I would love to know what online gun retailers are out there that ship to private citizens, because I've not seen any. Gun Broker allows for an individual to sell to another individual, but the gun itself is shipped to a licensed gun dealer, and THEY then run the background check before turning it over to the buyer.

I'm not being sarcastic here, but saying "I want it harder for bad guys to get guns" is pretty much right up there with "Think of the children" laws that lead to banning pornography and the next thing you know Livejournal's getting hit by Warriors for Innocence for its erotic ( ... )
