Well, things are ultra quiet here in Auburn with all the interesting people being gone to Texas and most everyone still gone on break. Work has been pleasantly quiet, too. Or, at least as quiet as can be expected when 3/4 of your staff is gone away for a month

psssht. i don't think she atones. that is all. (i might owe it a re-read, but not much about her character pleases me).

You're right, she certainly doesn't atone. Not, at least, to the people whom she needs to atone to. And she is a vile character. Or, a character who behaves in a vile way. Yet she is so human, so flawed - just like a real person, and that's what makes her so perfect, I think. I think it's a brilliant book. The ending is just so moving and powerful to me. I think, overall, I just like McEwan's style, the gothic elements, and the postmodern-ness of the story, and that's why it appeals to me so much.
