I don't see how _everyone_ doesn't get used then. It's not like people don't use other people like that in common everyday life.
You've got the friends you trust, the friends you know and the friends who you're only friends with because your friends are friends with them. :P Just how it works, not like anyone's intentionally using you to get to know someone else. They know you know ___, so why not ask? Then they're friends with you because they like talking to you, what you have in common the most though might be that you're both friends with so-and-so is all.
Just my point of view on it. Not saying some people _do_ intentionally use others, but just not on the scale you might be seeing it on.
