His own smear campaign got ahead of him. He had to do that, lest something dire happen and he somehow be tied to it for all the inciting things (read: lies) that he had Palin say to rile the people up in the first place....
Exactly...he's done nothing about all the smear and lies that have been out there for months. The only reason he said anything now was because it was being said in front of him. He didn't have a choice but to defend Obama.
