I do like your take on Spike; I think this reads well as an AU. Except for a few minor bits of Spike-backstory and, of course, the end, this could have fit into canon. Thanks for posting!

Thank you! Yeah, it was written before a lot of the Spike backstory came out. I debated fixing that, but I decided it's better to let it stand as-is. (Also, heh, if I rewrote everything that I don't like, I'd never get anything posted!)
