anything by anne lamott is awesome. she's my favorite. she has a few memoirs, but a lot of fiction. and all of her fiction is really good.

does it have to be white american or just american? i can give you a whole list of stuff i read last year for american lit...

*So Far From God - Ana Castillo
*Crescent - Diana Abu Jaber
*The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien
*Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
*Killing Yourself To Live - i forgot his name but the last name starts with a K. But any of his novels are supposed to be amazing.
*A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving (although it is kind of long, it is an amazing book. I'm pretty sure Irving is American)
*Dogeaters - (don't remember the author. i actually didn't read it but everyone in my class liked it. however there are a TON of characters to keep straight).
*Anything by Chuck Palahniuk.

Scratch Fear and Loathing. It is non-fiction.

we actually read Fear and Loathing for that class. supposedly half of the stuff is real and the other half is made up, so that's why we read it. trippy book.

thanks for the suggestions. :)
