the character did have the unfortunate luck of making her debut in a season where a writer's strike cast a shadow upon the whole industry
It really was rotten luck, for the character and for Lauren. I often wonder what other trials she would have put the boys through (and, my god, those clashes between her and the boys were always so much fun), or what other hidden parts of her personality could have been slowly revealed had the season been of normal-length.
but basically the song talks about society's need for strong, smart, beautiful, or independent women to self-destruct
Such a good point, and immensely frustrating. One thing I've loved about SPN is how most (if not all) of its recurring female characters have been strong, smart, independent and complex women. If only more of them had lived. :/
Wonderful write-up on the character, fandom's reaction to her and your own feelings about her!
I guess I relate to her because of her strength, ability to put on a brave face, refusal to play the victim, and her very matter of fact brutally honest opinions of life. At the same time I think I can relate to how alone she must feel in everything she's going through and the vulnerability, and loss of control that go along with her situation. This, right there, is the perfect description of Bela. ♥
It's funny 'cause I love this character and I've never even watched SPN and I don't really want to watch it either. But I read stuff about her and watch vids and she reminds me of Ana Lucia (I've even seen a video that compared them both, plus the way fandom treats them is pretty much the same), so I'm just going to keep on loving a character I've never actually seen in canon. ;]
