Bridging the Gaps

Jared was nervous, more nervous than when he’d practically forced Jensen to pour his heart out about Justin Fucking Hartley. But, then, he hadn’t really thought about it; he’d just blurted it out.

He didn’t want to push Jensen away again, couldn’t stand another week of complete silence, but the question had been burning in his brain for three days straight. Why was Jen scared on Halloween? That’s what he’d seen in Jensen’s eyes, his face, his whole demeanor, even if for just a split second: fear. But, fear of what?

Jared was fully committed to this relationship, to Jensen. It had been a mere 6 weeks since they’d met and already he was willing to lay his life on the line. Sure, he hadn’t really told Jensen that yet, but Jared knew that he had a bad habit of falling too fast. Then he would always end up blurting it out and scaring the other person. He didn’t want to do that with Jensen; he wanted to do it right.

So, that’s why he asked, finally, after three days of wondering and torturing himself over what he could have done to raise that emotion. If Jensen was scared of him, he needed to know so he could fix it.

They were sitting on Jared’s couch, a rare night alone without Chad barging in or having to scream over people at the bar. Jensen was cuddled up against Jared’s side, head on his shoulder, watching some movie on Sci-Fi that was so cheesy it could’ve been a comedy.

When a commercial came on, Jared cleared his throat and nudged Jensen up a little, so he could look at his face. “Can I …ask you something?”

Jensen’s face was a mixture of confusion and unease, but he didn’t vocalize any of it, just nodded his head slightly in a motion for Jared to continue.

Clearing his throat again, Jared shifted uneasily on the couch, picking at some loose threads on the bottom of his jeans. “The other night,” he ventured, sparing a quick glance through his bangs to see if Jensen was still with him, “at the bar…Halloween. When we were… when I said… you…I mean…you looked like…well…”

Jensen’s quiet laugh brought Jared’s head snapping up. “What’s funny?” he asked, heart beating fast, irrationally sure that Jensen was going to walk out the door for reading too much into something.

Jensen sighed, “Nothing, Jared. It’s just…it’s stupid.” With that, he extricated his limbs from Jared’s and stood up from the couch. He strode into the kitchen, leaving Jared to stare after him in shock and mild frustration.

When Jensen reemerged with two fresh beers, Jared tried again, “It’s not nothing. Jen…something was wrong that night.”

Jensen turned to look at him fully, eyebrow quirked. “Wrong? From what I recall, it was the hottest sex I’ve had - or seen, for that matter - in a long time. Did you…was I the only one that…enjoyed it?”

It was Jared’s turn to let out nervous chuckle. “No, not that part. That was…” He paused for a moment, feeling the heat begin its southward travel at the memory of it. “That was hot.”

Jensen didn’t say anything, still staring at Jared with a confused expression. Jared sighed, shaking his head. “When I, uh…asked you to… you know…you looked…I don’t know, man, you looked scared.”

Jensen’s brow cleared and he looked at Jared, sheepishly, through lowered lashes. “I’ve only, uh…ever bottomed for…one person. Well, now two, I guess. He…inexperienced and I…uh…”

Then it clicked in Jared’s brain. Of course. Justin. Fucking.

“Hartley?” he said with a sigh.

Jensen nodded, blush creeping into his cheeks. It was so cute that Jared couldn’t resist pulling him down on top of him, not caring whether the bottles in Jensen’s hands were open or not, and crushing their lips together.

Jensen shifted in his grip, awkwardly turning his body to set the beers - closed, luckily - on the coffee table before reaching up and threading both hands in Jared’s hair. He angled his head, tongue coming out to run along Jared’s lips, gently but forcefully prying them open. Jared was all too happy to comply, bringing his tongue out to swirl lazily around Jensen’s with a deep moan.

Far too soon for Jared’s liking, Jensen pulled away, chuckling.

Jared blinked up at him incredulously. “Something funny? I wasn’t done.”

Jensen shook his head and climbed off Jared’s lap to sit next to him on the couch. He brought his legs up onto the cushions, sitting Indian-style in order to look at Jared. He cleared his throat, fidgeting nervously and wringing his hands. “Um. Since we’re, uh…sharing…can I…Well. I need to ask you something…”

Jared sat up straighter, a bad feeling settling in his stomach. It wasn’t that he didn’t want Jensen to know…he just didn’t particularly like talking about it. “Shoot.”

“Tell me your story.”

Jared took a deep breath and leaned over to grab one of the beers, twisting the cap off and throwing it somewhere in the general vicinity of the kitchen. After a couple long pulls, silence weighing on Jared’s shoulders like a forty-ton elephant, he cleared his throat and began.

“I was engaged. To a girl named Sandy. I proposed because I thought that’s what was expected of me, what my parents wanted, what she wanted. But, even as I got down on one knee and asked the question, I knew it’s not what I wanted.”

A quick glance at Jensen showed him that he was listening with rapt attention, mouth hanging slightly open in shock. Jared smiled, suddenly much more at ease than he had been seconds before.

It was nice, having Jensen around.

“I knew I was gay. Or I was pretty sure anyway. But, I didn’t necessarily mind being with Sandy, so why not, right? I was going to UT for engineering, so I’d be making tons of money and I had a beautiful girl to spend my life with. Every guy’s dream. But, as time went on, I just couldn’t stand it any more, lusting after every mildly hot guy within a two-mile radius, lying to Sandy, lying to myself… I was only making myself miserable.

“Well…when I’d finally had enough, I told Sandy the truth. I told her I was gay because there was no escaping it anymore and she’d already known that something was going on anyway. We just weren’t working as well as we should have, as we had been. She took it well enough. Sure, there were tears - on both our parts - but, it was something that neither one of us could fix.”

Jared paused for a moment, tears beginning to well up in his eyes. The next part wasn’t easy to think about, let alone talk about. That’s when he felt Jensen’s hand slide into his. He looked down at their interlinked fingers, a small half-smile spreading on his face. Jensen gave his fingers a squeeze then brought their joined hands up to his mouth, kissing the back of Jared’s.

Jared sighed, settling further back into the couch cushions. “Sandy was more pissed off than she’d let on. She outed me to everyone - my family, my friends, my teachers, anyone that would stop to listen. My family was her first stop. Getting a call from your mother at 3:00 in the morning with her screaming into the phone is not a pleasant experience. I was very eloquently informed that my parents didn’t raise me to ‘be a queer.’”

Jensen’s intake of breath at his mom’s words was oddly comforting, and he shifted around until he was lying back against Jensen’s shoulder, staring at the lights dancing on the walls. Jensen snaked his free arm around Jared’s chest and just held him there, a light weight grounding him, keeping them together.

“Ironically enough,” Jared continued with a wry grin, “I could deal with the family issues, even the friends. If they didn’t accept me initially, either they would come around or they wouldn’t and I’d just have to wait to find out. But, when Sandy went to the faculty of the engineering department, she crossed a line that I couldn’t begin to figure out.

“I was in the running for this major internship out in Arkansas for the summer. It was a big deal, good hands-on experience. It would have given me an awesome connection within the engineering world. But, when my advisor found out that I was gay, he freaked. He hadn’t written my recommendation letter yet, so he filled it with all this stuff about how I was a terrible student, unreliable, couldn’t find my way out of a paper bag. Needless to say, I didn’t get the internship.”

“Jay,” Jensen breathed, tightening his arm and kissing the back of Jared’s head. “I’m sorry…did you ever talk to Sandy about all this?”

Jared laughed then, a sound he knew was unpleasant. “Yeah, I confronted her. How could I not? That’s when she blew up. She said that she’d done what she’d set out to do - ruin my life in any way possible, just like I’d ruined hers. Two days later, she took off for L.A. I haven’t seen or spoken to her since.”

There was an uneasy tension in the room when Jared stopped talking; he knew how Jensen had to be feeling because he’d been there just a couple weeks before. There was nothing that could be done to erase the past. It was there to stare you in the face every day, rearing its ugly head when you least expected it.

“So, what happened then? Why aren’t you a big time engineer now?”

Jared was brought back to the present, snapped out of his memories with the question.

“I quit school, couldn’t face anyone anymore. My classmates kept giving me looks that alternated between disgust and sympathy, and I couldn’t handle either. There was no hope of getting a different internship, not with that school. Anyway, Chad wanted to open the bar, and I knew he’d need help, someone with a level head, so I offered. S’not like I was going to be missed at UT. That was about a year and a half ago. I’ve barely spoken to my family, other than my sister. Tom, Chad…they became my family. That’s all I needed.”

Jared paused then, taking a deep breath and turning in Jensen’s arms to look at him. “At least it was until I met you.”

Jensen was visibly taken aback by the admission. Confusion filtered into his eyes again and he pulled his hands back to sit in his lap. “You…wait. What?”

“Jen, I…will you promise not to freak out?” Jensen nodded. “Good. I. Well. I haven’t really...You’re the first relationship I’ve had. Since Sandy, I mean. And, I…God, you’ve screwed everything up.”

Jared laughed at the expression on Jensen’s face and reached over, grabbing both of his hands. “Jensen…You’re the first person I’ve trusted in God-knows-how-long. I’m fairly certain that I’m falling in love with you and I can’t stop it and I don’t want to and -”

Jared was effectively cut off when Jensen suddenly tackled him, smashing their lips together almost painfully. He let out an undignified grunt but wasted no time in responding, chuckling as he did so. He slid back on the couch, bringing his legs up onto the cushions and settling Jensen more fully on top of him.

Jensen was kissing him with forceful passion, tongue slipping past Jared’s lips as soon as he’d made contact. Jared gave as good as he got, resulting in the occasional clicking of teeth, and he was pretty sure that he ended up biting Jensen’s tongue and getting his own bitten in the process at some point. Not that it really mattered, because Jensen was there. He was there to stay, not running for his life.

One of Jensen’s hands was threading through Jared’s hair, gently, the complete opposite sensation from their dueling tongues. If anything, that just made Jared’s dick harder, made him moan louder. He could feel the hard line of Jensen’s erection through both of their jeans, a subtle shift bringing them to just the right position.

Jensen moaned into his mouth, the sound shooting straight down Jared’s spine. “Jay…we gotta…nngh…more,” he panted against Jared’s lips.

“Yeah,” Jared breathed, pushing Jensen up and onto his back, following and sliding down his legs. He sat down on Jensen’s thighs and quickly undid the belt and button-fly of his jeans, wasting no time in pulling out the hard, silky flesh inside.

Jensen nearly shot off the couch as Jared fisted his cock and pulled. Jensen was moaning loudly, head thrashing on the arm of the couch. His face was flushed, lips kiss-swollen, and Jared thought he’d never looked more beautiful. The grunts and whispered pleas falling from his lips only amplified the effect.

“Jen,” Jared whispered, leaning down to kiss the stretch of Jensen’s neck exposed by his T-shirt, “M’gonna suck you off…so good… you’re gonna explode…”

Jensen gasped. “Well, then…you, nnghg…better h-h-hurry,” he sputtered, words ending on another long moan.

Jared chuckled, sliding further down Jensen’s legs until he was perched on his shins. He leaned down and licked a stripe up the length of Jensen’s dick, smiling when it gave an answering twitch. He wasted no time in sucking the head into his mouth, laving it with his tongue and paying particular attention to the bundle of nerves underneath.

One of Jensen’s hands went back to Jared’s head, gripping the strands almost painfully, while the other grappled for purchase on the back of the sofa. Filth was pouring out of his mouth, promises and exhalations of Jared’s name.

Jared was achingly hard, his dick throbbing against the confines of his pants. As he engulfed Jensen, nose tickled by coarse hairs, he reached down between them and released his erection. He jacked himself off to the rhythm both his mouth and other hand were creating on Jensen.

“Jay…m’gonna…”

Jared moaned and pulled back slightly. Not two seconds later, Jensen was arching up off the cushions with a hoarse cry, and cum splashed, white-hot, across Jared’s tongue. He made sure to catch every drop, milking Jensen as dry as possible before it became too much and Jensen feebly pushed at his head.

Jared sat back on his haunches, fully prepared to jack himself to the sight of Jensen lying debauched among the ridiculous throw pillows - Chad had insisted on those, thank you very much - but he didn’t get a chance. Jensen moved and pushed Jared back, almost immediately engulfing his dick, smacking his hand away in the process.

If Jared weren’t so far gone, turned on to the point of blindness, he may have heard the front door open. But, as it were, he didn’t. Jensen’s tongue was doing things Jared could never have even imagined. All Jared could really do was thread his fingers through Jensen’s short hair and hang on for the ride

When he looked down, seeing his cock sliding through those sinfully perfect lips, Jared lost it. His fingers tightened - painfully, he was sure - on Jensen’s head and he bit down hard enough on his lip to draw blood as he let go, cumming in Jensen’s mouth, feeling Jensen’s throat convulsing around the head of his dick. Stars exploded in his vision, blacking everything out besides Jensen and the pure bliss, the pure love, that he felt when that man was around.

It wasn’t long before reality came crashing down on him, though. He was just beginning to think about working through the post-orgasmic haze to thank Jensen - or do that feelings-professing thing again if this was the result - when someone called out from the end of the couch, just above Jared’s head.

“Oh. My. God.”

Jensen pulled away quickly and tried to get Jared tucked back into his jeans. He made himself decent just as fast. The blush on his skin disappeared underneath the neck of his shirt, making his freckles stand out. Jared wondered how he could look embarrassed and completely fucked-out at the same time.

Jared, however, was hardly bothered by Chad’s unwelcome presence. Sure, it was unnerving, having your roommate walk in on your boyfriend giving you oral sex. But, it was Chad and maybe seeing that show would get him off Jared’s back. He hadn’t mentioned anything to Jensen - even though it was a well-known fact that Chad had a weird, unrequited infatuation with Jared - that Chad had been making, or was attempting to make, semi-subtle advances since he’d moved in.

As far as Jared was concerned, no one needed to know. Because Chad? Way too many potential diseases to even consider going there. And, he was nothing - repeat: nothing - compared to Jensen Ackles.

“I don’t know if I’m scarred for life or if that’s going to be my new favorite fantasy.”

“Oh, gross,” Jensen groaned, leaning over and burying his head in the crook of Jared’s neck.

Jared laughed, wrapping his arms protectively around Jensen’s shoulders. “Chad, don’t you have some STDs to spread? Me and my boyfriend here are in the middle of something.”

Chad snorted, looking derisively at Jared, “Looks to me like you’re finished. Besides. I live here.”

“Just go away,” came the muffled response from Jared’s shoulder.

Chad rolled his eyes and stomped away - yes, stomped, like an annoying, petulant 7-year-old. Jared glared at his retreating form for a second before looking down at Jensen, who was still hiding his face.

It was the cutest thing he’d ever seen.

“Jen.” He kissed the top of Jensen’s head. “C’mon, you’re not that mortified, are you?”

Jensen looked up; a small smile was tugging at the corner of his mouth, but there was a sad sort of look in his eyes. “Dude,” he whined, “I just gave that fucker a very good look at your very nice dick. We just added fuel to the fire, man. He’s never going to leave us…leave you alone now.”

Jared moved one hand so that it was cupping Jensen’s face before kissing him softly. “Jen…don’t let him bother you, okay? I told you, I -”

“Yeah, I know,” Jensen sighed, effectively cutting Jared off before he could get the words out. Jared had half a mind to say something about that, but Jensen was climbing off the couch and talking again before he got the chance. “You hungry? My treat. I’ll even let you Super-Size your meal if you’re nice.”

Jared laughed, forcing his limbs to move. “I think I was plenty nice to you just a few minutes ago.”

“Yeah, yeah, this is true. But I know you can do better than that,” Jensen retorted, throwing a wink over his shoulder as he headed for the front door, shrugging into his jacket.

Jared followed suit. “Well,” he replied thoughtfully, “If you’re nice, maybe you’ll get more than just a Big Mac.”
