Of Nitrous Oxide and Canines
Jensen pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers and shook his head, trying desperately to resist smacking the man across the table.
He knew he should have just waited for Tommy.
“Look,” he ground out through gritted teeth, “just tell me what you think he’ll like best. Okay? Simple question, simple answer. I’m not asking you to refer me to any sex shops so that I can buy him…ah…what were the words you used? Oh yes. ‘Something the whole family can enjoy.’”
Jensen opened his eyes to the blinding white teeth of Michael Rosenbaum and sighed. “Why do you have to be so difficult?”
If at all possible, Mike’s smile seemed to grow wider. And more shit-eating. “’tis all part of the charm, my dear Jenny,” he mused, waggling his eyebrows suggestively.
Jensen groaned, pushing himself up from the table and throwing down some money to cover the bill. “I bought you lunch, can’t you just be serious for an hour? Half an hour? Five minutes? I’m willing to compromise here.”
Mike followed suit, extracting himself from the table and reluctantly separating himself from the empty beer glass in his hand. As Jensen started walking away, further into the depths of the mall, Mike caught up and slung his arm around Jensen’s shoulders, squeezing him slightly.
“Why didn’t you just call Tom?” Mike asked, rather loudly and right in Jensen’s ear. “You knew he’d be far better at this sort of thing.”
Jensen groaned again. “I did call Tom, Mike. You honestly think you were my first choice to go shopping with? For my boyfriend, of all people?”
If Mike was offended, he didn’t show it. He just laughed and began steering his friend this way and that, dodging women with strollers and grandmothers with canes.
“Anyway,” Jensen continued, trying to pull Mike in the directions he wanted to go, “Tommy said he was busy today. He’s got plans, apparently.”
That stopped Mike in his tracks, causing some poor, harried-looking man to crash right into his back. The man shot an irritated look at Mike’s back, spared an annoyed glance at Jensen, then hurried on, juggling his armful of packages again. Jensen, at least, had the decency to shout an apology after him.
When Jensen turned back to chastise Mike for not being mindful that there were other people in the universe besides him, the look on his old friend’s face stopped him cold. He had never in his life seen Mike look as…unsettled as he did then.
“Mike?” Jensen asked hesitantly, taking a step into the other man. “Is something wrong?” When he didn’t get an answer, he grabbed Mike’s elbow and steered him over to a bench, out of the way of rushing customers.
“Did he say what he was doing? Who he was with?”
Mike spoke suddenly, startling Jensen. Jensen sat down next to his friend, and turned to face him, trying to hide his grin. It was suddenly crystal clear what the problem was - and Jensen was way too amused for it to be healthy. Mike and Tom had been dancing around each other since high school, since before either of them was even sure they were gay. But, after Halloween - which seemed to be a good night for everyone, he recalled with a blush - things had escalated. There had been several times that Tom had been almost affectionate, in public nonetheless, toward Mike.
“Rosey. Dude. Seriously? You’re worried about who Tom’s with?” Jensen teased, chuckling. “Honestly, I have no clue where he is or what he’s doing. But, if you’re really worried about it, maybe you should just suck it up and tell the man what you want. No jokes, no gross innuendos, just straight up: ‘Tom, I want you and I want to try being something.’ Would that be so hard?”
Mike was practically squirming on the bench under the weight of Jensen’s words; Jensen couldn’t help but feel somewhat bad for him. Mike was just who he was - it wasn’t entirely his fault that he couldn’t be serious when it really counted.
Sighing, Jensen stood up. “C’mon. I still need a present for Jared. We’re heading back home tomorrow, remember? And, Christmas Eve is the day after. There’s not going to be any other time to do this.”
Without another word, the two headed back into the hustle and bustle of the mall. It took a couple hours, and several embarrassed salesgirls, but eventually Jensen found the perfect gift. He just hoped Jared would think it was.
Of course, he hadn’t found it anywhere near a mall. Which means he could have avoided all of the embarrassment. Damn Rosey.

Jared couldn’t stop fidgeting. They were 30 minutes outside Richardson, half an hour from the Ackles house, and he was really regretting his decision to spend Christmas with Jensen’s family. Maybe he should have just stayed home and celebrated with Chad, like he’d done last year. Sure, burgers weren’t exactly part of a traditional Christmas feast, and Chad’s company was absolute crap as of late, but he could deal.
At least then he wouldn’t be under scrutiny.
“Jay,” Jensen laughed, his hand settling on Jared’s knee, “calm down. If you really don’t want to go through with this, I’ll give you the car and you can head on home. But, if you’re going to do it, please sit still. You’re making me nervous.”
Jared blew out a breath, looking over at his boyfriend. Jensen was smiling, looking the happiest Jared had ever seen him; he was practically glowing. He felt an all-too-familiar warmth settle in his belly as he felt his own face break out into a smile.
Jared linked his fingers with Jensen’s and pulled their joined hands up, kissing along Jensen’s knuckles. “I love you,” he murmured into Jensen’s skin.
Jensen glanced over at Jared, eyes twinkling. “I love you, too.”
Jared nodded, and settled back into his seat, returning his gaze the window. He gave Jensen’s hand a gentle squeeze before he let him return it to the wheel. Jared was trying his best to relax, to get rid of the nerves, when he suddenly realized that Jensen hadn’t even flinched when Jared had said he loved him. That was the first time there’d been no adverse reaction, not even a small one. He let that thought surround him, warming him from the inside out, proving to him just how right this decision was.
Maybe that would be enough to get him through the next few days.
* * *
Jared’s not sure who he expected to be answering the door at Jensen’s parents’ place, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but it most certainly wasn’t Michael Rosenbaum. He heard Jensen groan in unison with him.
“Rosey, did you even stop to see your own parents before you came to bother mine?” Jensen asked, amused.
Mike smiled. “Sure did. Dragged ‘em with me.” He stepped back to let Jared and Jensen slip into the house.
They’d barely set their bags down before an older woman rushed into the foyer and enveloped Jensen in a hug. Jensen let out a muffled “Hey mama” as he wrapped his arms around her in turn.
Jensen looked so happy to be home, and his mother looked just as happy to have him there. Jared noticed that his mom didn’t seem to bear too much resemblance to her son - Jensen’s face was all solid angles whereas Mrs. Ackles had a rounder face, a softer expression. But then there were the eyes: Mrs. Ackles had those same green eyes that Jared loved so much.
Jared stood back from the doorway and allowed his boyfriend to be leapt on by several family members - including Tom, who they’d literally just seen yesterday. He found it funny that he knew exactly who belonged to whom. Mike’s parents were easy to spot: they both seemed to have their son’s evil grin. Tom’s mom and little sister had the same blue eyes that he sported while his father had the shock of black hair, although it was graying at the sides. Jensen’s father looked like Jensen, though it was as if someone had taken his features and smeared them a bit. Jensen’s siblings - Josh and Mackenzie - both looked like Mrs. Ackles, softer but just as keen.
When hellos and hugs were all exchanged, Jensen looked around, with an almost panicked look in his eyes, until he discovered Jared hiding in the corner. Jared watched the smile grow on Jensen’s face, eyes sparkling even more than they had when he’d first seen his family, and he couldn’t help but smile back. Jensen moved through the crowded foyer until he could wrap his fingers in Jared’s, giving them a small squeeze before he cleared his throat, causing everyone to turn to them. Jared’s sure everyone heard him swallow.
“Everyone, I want you all to meet Jared Padalecki.” There was a chorus of semi-confused hellos until Jensen held up his hand to silence them all, grin plastered to his face. “Let me rephrase that. This is Jared, my boyfriend.”
At that, there were a couple catcalls - though Jared’s pretty sure that was all from Mike - and suddenly Jared found himself being hugged by Mrs. Ackles. When he pulled back from her, she had tears in her eyes. He must have given her a questioning look because she hugged him again, managing to whisper in his ear, “Jensen’s told us how wonderful you are…I’m just glad that you’re real.”
Jared laughed, and Mrs. Ackles moved away, allowing Jensen’s sister and Tom’s mom, whom he’d met before, to move forward for hugs. The rest of them settled for handshakes and nice-to-meet-yous. Except for that bear-hug from Mike.
The rest of the evening went more smoothly than Jared could have imagined. It was like having his own family back again, except better. Jared’s family were all good people, sure, but they were never as laid back as Jensen’s, even before the whole gay thing came to light. Jared found himself being drawn into the conversations, getting plenty of dirt on Jensen to use later, and actually enjoying himself. But the time he and Jensen got to retire to their room, stuffed full of the best barbeque Jared had ever experienced, it was well past midnight.
“Your family is awesome,” Jared declared as he crawled into the guest bed next to Jensen. “Dude, they even let us sleep in the same bed.”
Jensen laughed, rolling over on his side to face Jared. “Yeah, they are pretty awesome, aren’t they?” Jared nodded. “I’m glad you like them, Jay.”
Jared smiled and moved forward, wrapping his arms around Jensen’s waist, to place a gentle kiss on Jensen’s lips. “I’m glad they like me,” he murmured. Then, sadly, he added, “I wish my family could’ve met you.”
Jensen’s eyes softened and he pulled Jared in closer. “I’m sorry that your family doesn’t see how wonderful you are, Jared, I really am. You have no idea how terrible it makes me feel that mine is accepting.”
Jared pulled back a little so he could see Jensen’s eyes, laughing. “Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? ‘I’m sorry my family accepts us?’”
Jensen rolled his eyes and smiled, cuddling even more into Jared. “You know what I mean.”
Jared could only nod. He knew exactly what Jensen meant, but it didn’t matter. He’d made his peace with his family a long time ago. If they didn’t want him, fine. He could manage on his own. And, if he’d gone along with all of their plans to “fix” him, he’d never have met Jensen. So, really, what was so bad about it all? He had Jensen. And, maybe one day, Jensen’s family could become his own.
“Jay?” Jensen whispered just as Jared was drifting off to sleep, eyes resolutely closed.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for coming home with me,” Jensen whispered, “I love you.”
Jared smiled - that was the first time Jensen had said it first. He wrapped himself tighter around his boyfriend and whispered back, “I love you too.”

Christmas with the Ackles was all a blur. It was hectic, filled with a lot of people. Aunts, uncles, cousins, next-door neighbors. Jared was still worn out, two days later, as they made their way back to Austin. They made a quick stop at Jared’s apartment for him to drop off his stuff before they headed over to Jensen’s house to exchange the gifts they’d gotten for each other. Both men had agreed, before they left, that they’d rather do it alone, without all the attention they’d be getting from Jensen’s family.
It was nice to be fawned over, Jared had to admit. But he hadn’t been able to get Jensen alone for more than a few minutes at a time, except at night, and, by then, they were both too tired to do more than say goodnight to each other.
“Jared…did you hear anything I just said?”
Jared shook himself out of his thoughts, having taken to daydreaming about Jensen’s…well…his assets, which had been neglected for far too long. “I’m sorry… what?”
Jensen laughed knowingly as he walked into Jared’s sightline, straddling his thighs on the couch. “I said,” he began, pausing to lay a kiss on Jared’s lips, “I have to go pick up your present.” Pause, another kiss. This time he took the time to slip his tongue into Jensen’s mouth for a few seconds. “You stay here.”
One more kiss and then Jensen was climbing off Jared’s lap. Jared tried to follow his lips, groaning when Jensen laughed at him and walked out the door.
Jensen was only gone maybe a total of 20 minutes, but Jared bored easily. By the time Jensen walked back through the front door, he was ready to go insane. He jumped up as soon as he heard the key in the lock and met his boyfriend in the foyer. He was practically bouncing with excitement over his gift, wondering what on earth Jensen wouldn’t have been able to keep in his house.
But, Jensen didn’t have anything in his hands. He was just standing there in the doorway, blushing.
Jared cleared his throat. “Uh…Jen? Did you get me an invisible car or something? ‘Cause I was totally just joking when I said that I wanted Wonder Woman’s jet.”
Jensen laughed, shifting uneasily and resolutely not looking Jared in the eye. “No, I…uh. Just. If you don’t like it, we can figure out what to do. They might take them back. But I couldn’t think of a better present. And, these two…they just…well. Come on.”
Still not looking up at Jared, Jensen turned and walked back to the driveway. Jared started to follow, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw what awaited them. Jensen had even outfitted them with bows.
“Jen…they’re. Wow. They’re adorable. I always… you remembered?”
He looked away from the furry faces looking at him from Jensen’s SUV to find Jensen smiling at him, green eyes sparkling even in the harsh winter sunlight.
“You like them?” Jensen asked, hesitation evident in his voice.
Jared didn’t bother to try answering; he just moved forward swiftly and enveloped Jensen’s face in his hands, kissing him passionately. When they broke apart mere seconds later, they were both out of breath. Rather than attempting to thank Jensen with words that he couldn’t even begin to come up with, he ran over to the car and let out the puppies.
Jared bent down and let the puppies jump on him and knock him to the ground, both battling to bathe his face with more spit. He was in awe. He’d told Jensen once how much he’d wanted a dog as a kid, but his older brother was allergic, so the possibility was never entertained. Jensen had listened, actually paid attention to his ramblings. Jensen bought him not only one dog, but two. If he wasn’t sure that he was madly in love with the man before, there were no doubts in Jared’s head now.
“What’re you going to name them?”
Jared smiled up at Jensen, grabbing his hand and pulling him onto the ground as well. “I’m not sure,” he responded. “What do you think?”
Jensen laughed. “Oh, no, I’m not taking responsibility for that. These are your mutts; you name them. You’ve got a boy and a girl.” He paused and pointed to each. “And, uh…did I mention they were rescue pups? I got them from the pound…apparently, their owners or whoever just left them at the side of the road. The girl’s a German Shepard mix. I think the boy’s some sort of Mastiff, maybe?”
“Jensen you are amazing. You know that?” Jared asked, pulling Jensen in for a kiss. Of course, that meant the dogs also kissed him.
Jensen pulled away from the wandering tongues - all three of them - and laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m the best boyfriend in the world. Now what are you naming them? They’ve been sitting at Allison’s house for four days without names. I’m sure they’re anxious.”
Jared nodded. “Okay. Let’s think about this. Sit, guys.” He was surprised that both dogs listened to him, immediately parking their wagging butts on the ground in front of Jared and Jensen. “Well. I always wanted a motorcycle. So, you, boy, are Harley. Okay?” Harley barked at him, in a bored fashion, as though that was his name all along, and Jared was just too stupid to figure it out immediately.
“And, you, pretty girl,” he murmured, scratching the top of the pup’s head, “I have no idea. What is your name?” The dog’s response was a couple of short barks. Then, she moved over to Jensen, nosing at his side as though she were begging him to inform Jared.
Jensen chuckled, cooing to the dog and scratching her ears. “Well, Jay. She’s pretty bold. Straight-forward. What did they call that dance in high school? Where the girls asked the guys?”
Jared smiled, remembering his date’s awkward attempt to ask him. “Sadie-hawkins.”
“Then, that should be her name,” Jensen replied, matter-of-factly. “Is that okay?” he added meekly.
Jared nodded, moving closer until his chest was pressed up against Jensen’s side, the cold finally seeping through his jeans. “It’s perfect,” he whispered in Jensen’s ear. “Sadie, it is. What do you think, Sadie?”
He could have sworn that Sadie rolled her eyes at him as both she and Harley trotted toward the door to Jensen’s house. They walked right on in without any preamble.
Jared laughed, relishing in the shudder that passed through Jensen’s body at the rumbling in his own chest. He placed a sloppy kiss on the side of Jensen’s neck before standing up and pulling Jensen with him. After all, there was still a present to be given before they could have that long-overdue, mind-blowing sex.
“Okay, now, if you don’t like it, we’re just going to have to burn it because I can’t take it back. Not with the personalization and everything,” Jared rambled as they moved into the living room. “And we’ll have to get you a good case for it, too, since Tom and I ran out of time. Or, rather, he finally got fed up with Mike calling his cell phone every ten seconds.”
He positioned Jensen on the couch, the dogs planting themselves at his feet, and then went to get the large box from the foyer closet. He found himself getting nervous. He’d dragged Tom to the store to help him pick it out, and he was sure that Jensen would love it. And he should know, being Jensen’s cousin and all. But, what if Jensen didn’t like it? He had by-far exceeded his expectations as far as Jared’s gift went; Jared didn’t want to let him down.
Taking a deep breath, he walked back into the living room to find Sadie curled up on Jensen’s lap, eyelids drooping. He stopped in the doorway for a moment before alerting Jensen to his presence. It was just a nice picture, seeing his boyfriend playing daddy to his new dogs. God, he loved Jensen.
Jensen looked up suddenly, as though he could feel Jared’s eyes on him, and blushed immediately. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “She’s cute.”
Jared smiled and nodded, settling himself next to Jensen with the large box on his other side. “I think you’re going to have to give her up if you want to open your gift,” he chided.
Jensen let out a small whining noise. “But, she looks so comfy, Jay!”
Jared laughed, reaching over and picking up the puppy, depositing her in the armchair next to them. He then laid the box across both of their laps, wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans, what ifs swirling through his head fast enough to make him dizzy.
“This is huge, Jared…You didn’t have to spend a lot of money on me…”
Jared smiled, shaking his head to clear it, as he looked over at Jensen. Jensen’s eyes were wide with wonder, and he was grinning like an idiot. It made him look a little boy again - and Jared’s heart skipped another beat.
“Just open it,” Jared replied, leaning over for a quick kiss.
Jensen smiled as he tore into the bright red wrapping paper. He frowned when he saw the music store emblem on the front. Rather than ask questions that wouldn’t get any answers, he just shrugged it and opened up the box. What he saw took his breath away.
“It’s beautiful. What… I mean, how did you? Why?” Jensen looked up from the shiny black acoustic and fixed Jared with a piercing stare, the light in his eyes magnified tenfold.
Jared could feel himself blushing. He cleared his throat and looked away, fixing his eyes on the sleeping puppies now curled around each other in the armchair. “You mentioned once…a long time ago…that you used to have this amazing guitar. Priceless, you said. Collectible, almost. But, you had to sell it, right? To help cover the expenses of the whole Justin debacle? Well. I didn’t think that was fair. That you should have to give up something so precious to you for something as low as that.”
He paused for a minute, trying to clamp down on the rage that was building as he thought, again, of everything that Justin had taken from Jensen. When he looked back at Jensen, he wasn’t sure what he expected, but those green eyes welling up with tears wasn’t it. He could feel his own eyes watering in response, like his body was fine-tuned to Jensen’s.
Jensen reached over and grabbed his hand, linking their fingers together. “Thank you, Jay,” he whispered, his other hand running along the neck of the guitar. “I, uh. Don’t even know where to start. It’s…perfect. It’s…wow.”
Jared squeezed Jensen’s hand and reached over with his other hand to still Jensen’s movements along the guitar. “Did you see the engraving?”
Jensen shook his head, sniffling a little. Jared picked up the guitar a bit and turned it to highlight the three gold letters on the neck, right beneath the headstock. JRA.
Jared was sure that Jensen’s watery smile had enough brightness to sustain life on earth for a year, at least. Jared laughed and let the guitar fall back into the box as he pulled Jensen’s face around to his for a kiss. He could feel Jensen still smiling against his lips even as their tongues met somewhere in the middle.
Together, they managed to get the box on the floor, lips not losing contact. Then, Jared laid Jensen back on the couch, spreading out on top of him, weight balanced on either side of Jensen’s hips. Jensen’s hands came up to thread through Jared’s hair, angling his head to force the kiss deeper. Jared ran one of his hands up underneath Jensen’s T-shirt, feeling Jensen’s heated skin as a shiver passed through his own body.
He knew that he wasn’t going to last long, not after he’d been denied for days. But, he wanted it to last as long as he could. This was special; it was him and Jensen, a reaffirming of all they felt for each other.
Jensen trailed one of his hands down Jared’s back, fingers splaying around the swell of Jared’s ass, pulling him down gently so that their denim-clad erections lined up. Jared groaned at the contact, the sound swallowed by Jensen. Jared, unable to stop himself, began to slowly grind down against Jensen, who matched every thrust with a swivel of his hips.
The rhythm was slow, sensual, nothing frantic or needy about it, even though Jared was sure he would explode from the delicious torture of it all. The only clue that they were both about to lose it was in their kiss. While the movement of their bodies was controlled, their kissing was bordering on sloppy. Their tongues explored each other’s mouth, teeth almost coming together with dangerous force at times.
Jensen suddenly pulled away, panting. “Gotta get. Clothes. Can’t ruin. More. Off. Now.”
It was a testament to just how well they fit together that Jared understood exactly what Jensen was saying. Whimpering at the loss of friction, he sat up and removed first his shirt then Jensen’s, barely stopping to admire the perfect expanse of muscle that made up Jensen’s torso. Simultaneously, Jensen worked on their jeans, getting both pairs of pants down to their thighs, just enough so that their cocks could rub against each other without anymore trips to Old Navy - Jared’s sure that the salesgirls knew them by name, with how many pairs of pants they’d manage to ruin.
Jared wasted no time in diving back into Jensen, fusing their lips together like they were never meant to be apart. The first contact between their freed dicks had both men moaning against the other. They immediately got back into the rhythm they’d set, both trying desperately to keep the pace steady.
Jared could hardly stand it, an ache slowly creeping into his back and thighs from the position and warring heavily with the overwhelming sense of Jensen pouring into him. He shifted his legs to get better leverage and grabbed Jensen, just under his ass, and rolled them so that Jared was sitting on the couch with Jensen sitting on top of him.
He could feel Jensen smile again before their lips were separated. Jared grunted out his disappointment but was instantly silenced when Jensen’s mouth attached to his neck, just over his pulse. Jensen began sucking on Jared’s skin, hard enough to leave bruises, his tongue sliding over the spot in counter to the pressure.
That’s when Jared really began to lose it. He gripped Jensen’s hip with one hand, the other gripping Jensen’s back, slick with sweat, and pulling them closer together. Their dicks were now rubbing against each other in a more confined space, the ridges of their stomachs adding to the pleasure. Jensen caught on quickly and sped up his hips along with Jared, his mouth moving along Jared’s collarbone and back up to his jaw.
Jared so close he could practically taste the oncoming orgasm. He nudged Jensen’s face up and smashed their lips together, surprised that no teeth were broken in the process, though he was sure that some damage had been done. Good thing Jensen was a dentist.
Jensen groaned at the intrusion of Jared’s tongue, running his own alongside Jared’s, moving it up along Jared’s teeth. Jared moaned at the feeling and kissed Jensen with more passion. Jensen was moaning uncontrollably by this point, and Jared knew that he was about to go over the edge. Their thrusts lost their fluidity, becoming erratic as they barreled toward release.
Jensen pulled away and buried his face in the crook of Jared’s neck as came, whispering out Jared’s name. Surprised by the warmth splattering against his stomach, Jared followed quickly after, flopping his head back against the couch and squeezing his eyes shut as Jensen worked him through the aftershocks.
Both men completely spent, they sat there, cum drying on their bodies, panting harshly. Jared was trembling from the weight of the day, everything that had happened over the past few weeks. It had all led to something Jared never believed he would have.
A few minutes later, Jared was shaken out of his fast-approaching nap when Jensen started laughing. Jared startled back into the present. “Whasofunny?” he mumbled against Jensen’s shoulder, placing a kiss on his collarbone.
Jensen’s giggles died down a little as he shifted off Jared’s lap, sitting next to him with their thighs still touching, and looked over at the armchair. Jared looked over too and found both dogs staring at them, silently. He covered his eyes.
“Did my new kids just see us have sex?” he asked, barely managing to say ‘my’ instead of ‘our.’
Jensen nodded, biting his lip to stifle more giggles. Jared glanced in his direction and couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him. Jensen looked completely debauched, shirtless with his jeans still around his thighs. “Well,” he replied thoughtfully, “at least there are no secrets.”
Jensen erupted in another fit of giggles - which Jared would try very hard not to tease him for later. What could Jared do but join in?
As the fits died down, Jared scooted closer to Jensen, wrapping his arms around his sticky waist, and laid his head on his shoulder. “I love you, Jen,” he whispered. “Thank you so much for giving me the perfect Christmas.”
Jensen slid his arm around Jared’s shoulder, pulling him in tighter, and placed a kiss to the top of his head. “Likewise, Jay. Thank you. For everything. I love you so much.”
Jared barely heard Jensen’s words as sleep began to overtake him. He smiled as Jensen pulled his pants up, the feel of a warm, wet washcloth over his stomach being the last thing he felt before he went completely under.
