i have to say this post made me smile and giggle. i don't exactly share your outrage. i think it's wonderful. people shouldn't take art too seriously. louis the 14th was an ass anyway. his pretensiousness has been preserved versailles for a long ass time now. and it will continue to be so. but the palace was built with the state's money, and it can be whatever France wants it to be now. i think it's great. i think it breathes new life into a place that was designed to be intimidating. perhaps this will make it a little less so and bring in some additional tourist revenue. (i think they're still trying to recover from all the money he spent)
but then again i also like big colorful shiny things. ;-)
I was hoping someone would disagree with me :) I like to hear others views on things like this.
Since I was little and saw a book on Versailles I've really admired it - history aside. I does bring in revenue which I think is great because last I heard, the palace was falling apart. It just clashes a bit and looks rather awkward. I did like the picture with heart - but the lobster was hideous and I did laugh; a puke a little.
yeah, but the awkwardsness is one of the great things about it. it's unexpected, it provokes more thought than it would in an expected enviornemnt like a gallery with all white walls. it forces you to consider it in a different context. maybe even would make you think about how we got to this point in the history of art.
louis and his peeps set the standards for art at this time thru the French Academy started under his reign. it's kind of fun to throw it back in their face that art doesn't have to be historical or religous in nature to have value. (which is what they thought)
studying for my mid-term tonight (much of it on this subject) and thought of you, wondering if you ever responded. was wondering if i had entertained or infuriated you! glad to know it was the former. :-)
