:D The thing is, Britain isn't really all that important in the world any more. We may like to think we are, but I'm not that surprised we don't really make it on the news. :P Though I did watch some of John Stewart's spoofs on our election campaign - it's amusing to see things from another perspective at times ( ... )

This is really interesting, I'm glad you wrote all this down! I avoid discussing politics with anyone but my boyfriend right now, but I can imagine how tough that must be for an economics student living in London.

Immigration is a tough one for me too. I just close up as soon as people bring it up because it inevitably leads up to "Oh, no, not YOU, we mean those nasty Eastern Europeans/Pakistanis/BROWN PEOPLE who come from farawayoverthere!" I was actually quite pleased that Gordon Brown called that woman a bigot, because there is FAR too much pandering going on regarding the immigration debate, and that my country indulges and even encourages such racism is something I find particularly hateful.

:) Usually I don't get so annoyed by people - mainly because I can ignore things very well, but when it comes from friends, it almost gets personal, in a way.

I went on facebook the other day looking at the various threads they have there, and some woman had basically scrawled: "Nick Clegg = IMAGRATION" over the thread, repeating it every time the conversation moved away from her choice of topic.

because there is FAR too much pandering going on regarding the immigration debate.

Sadly, it's the way the system works. D: After the BNP gained their foothold into the political arena, I don't know what I'd prefer. Parties who pander to satisfy those who would vote for the BNP otherwise, or the BNP winning some seats at all. D:
