Notes: for anon ♥
Planet Mato was beautiful all year around. Every season was warm, sunny, and mild. The creatures that inhabited the planet weren't particularly violent, but oh, they were curious. At a young age, Daehyun had developed a great curiosity for the planet he lived on, as well as other planets far far away, the ones he heard about in tales as a child. This curiosity, this passion for knowledge gathered the attention of the elders, and after passing initial tests with flying colors, Daehyun was accepted on the team for interplanetary travel.
At twelve years old Daehyun started training. He met other young aliens that would be on his team one by one - there were five of them on the last day of training years later, and while they weren't best friends, they had created a unanimous bond.
A week before they were to depart for the foreign planet of Earth, a new member was introduced to the team.
“Wahhh isn't he cute?” Viceroy Hyosung squealed and patted her latest team member on the head. “He is Z-154985C6. He will be accompanying you to Earth.”
The robot blinked repeatedly, his heavily made-up eyes barely visible through the blond fringe hanging in front of his face. He was small, he was thin, and it didn't look like he smiled much.
Could robots smile?
“I call him Zelo~” Hyosung giggled and gently nudged him forward. “Say hello~”
“Greetings,” the robot spoke, and his voice was surprisingly... non-robotic.
Daehyun tilted his head, watching quietly and adjusting the mask on his chin while the other aliens went forward and awed over the technology. What was the point of a robot? Why were they created? What purpose would Z-1549856C6 serve to the mission on Earth?
Zelo blinked, blinked and blinked at all of the aliens, unemotionally moved by their enthusiastic greetings.

Daehyun liked to wander off by himself. He liked to find the questions of Earth and try to solve them on his own. Why was the grass green? Why was the sky blue? What was this strange occurrence of nature called 'rain'?
He would walk down crowded streets, he would sit in the park, he would wander pretty much anywhere and everywhere, throwing himself into the human's lives and seeing through their eyes.
As he sat on a hill in the park, filtering his fingers through the grass, he was a bit surprised when the robot came and sat down next to him. Quietly they sat together, the wind ruffling their hair and the sun kissing their skin.
“Can you feel?” Daehyun asked. He was sent to Earth to find the answers to the questions, but he found himself wanting the answers to Z-1549856C6.
Zelo blinked, blinked and blinked at Daehyun for a moment, as if processing the question. He lifted his hands, looked at them for a moment, and then carefully sifted his fingers through the blades of grass like Daehyun had just been doing. A frown knit on his features and he pressed his palm to the cool Earth, first softly, and then more insistently.
Robots couldn't smile.
Daehyun put his hand on top of Zelo's, surprised that the appendage was warm. He was under the impression that Zelo would be as cold as the metal he was crafted from... but he wasn't. He was soft and fleshy. Like a human.
Guiding the robot's hand through the grass, Daehyun spoke quietly, voice muffled by his mask. “You don't have to try so hard. Feeling isn't a function that can be carried out by a command from the motherboard. It's... its own thing.”
Zelo blinked, blinked blinked at the ground, at their hands, the frown on his features slowly dissipating as his fingers spread over the grass. “Feel...”
Daehyun smiled a bit when Zelo's pupils dilated and the processors in his irises calmed down. Was he feeling? Could he understand the sensation?
The robot glanced up at Daehyun, his eyes flicking to the alien's smile, before he pulled his hand away from the grass and from Daehyun's as well.
“Robots can't feel.” Zelo stood up, leaving Daehyun on the feel.
Robots couldn't smile, but they could lie.
-
A movie was playing in the living room at their headquarters, and Zelo was sitting on the couch curled up with a pillow, intently watching what was on screen. Daehyun watched from the table, his fingers hovering on the keys, pausing his incident report about Yong Guk accidentally setting Himchan on fire.
Robots can't feel the grass between their fingers or the Earth beneath their feet... but could they feel emotion?
Daehyun got up and moved to sit on the other end of the couch, watching the movie. It was one of Yong Guk's war movies, but there was a lot of romance, and it seemed like Zelo's processors were working on overdrive to try and figure it out.
“Can you feel emotion?” Daehyun asked, his eyes turning towards Zelo.
Zelo frowned, “Does not compute.”
It didn't compute, and yet he could frown in response?
“Emotion. This movie has romance. Love.” Daehyun folded his arms across his chest. Why did Viceroy give them such a useless robot? Couldn't feel, couldn't have emotion... he was rudimentary.
“Robots can't love.” Zelo stood up and removed himself from the room, heading in the direction of his charging pod.
Another dead end.
Maybe some mysteries couldn't be solved. Daehyun figured he would just stick to the mystery of the humans that inhabited this planet.
-
Daehyun snapped. He pulled his mask down from his chin and pushed Zelo up against the wall, mouth melding to the robot's, their chests sliding together. Zelo let out a whimper, his hands raised to Daehyun's arms that were pinning him to the wall, and Daehyun pulled away, his eyes searching the robot's face.
Flushed cheeks, swollen lips, wet eyes.
“You can feel.” Daehyun whispered, pressing his forehead to Zelo's, his fingers winding through the robot's soft locks, hair that was just as soft as his own.
Zelo blinked, blinked and blinked at Daehyun, and a small smile spread on his lips as he nodded.
Robots could smile, and feel, in the end.
