What in the world possessed the IOC to have the "Beijing" equestrian events in Hong Kong? Was that to make that territory feel included, or were there more practical reasons?

Looking at a map, that would be the rough distance equivalent of having an event in the 2018 "Reno-Tahoe" games in Houston, Texas.

Every candidate city has a party scheduled. See Athens in 1990 or Paris in 2005.

I still don't understand your claim that the IOC "promised" the Games to any city who did not then host them (at least since Denver '76). I've gone looking for the news at the time in 1988, and I've only found the reports from the New York Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The P-I quotes a member of the Anchorage delegation stating that his city was "the perceived favorite", but the NYT story claims that Sofia and Ostersund were viewed as the favorites.

Do you have a source for your claim that the IOC promised the Games (to any non-winning city, including Anchorage) before the vote was held?

It was heavily implied, given the glowing op-eds appearing daily in the Anchorage Daily News, the IOC's frequent gushing reports to the media about how much they loved the area, about how rapidly the construction of venues was progressing, etc.

I actually talked to my grandfather (who I was visiting that summer) last night. Per his recollection, that party we went to was actually put on the USOC and the City of Anchorage: the IOC, the ones in charge of deciding the host city, had nothing to do with leading us on like that. I don't recall exactly, but I do remember it being a whole lot of nothing after the decision was made.

There's really no reason to still be pissed 20 years later, and 14 years after those particular games are over and done with. I can say, however, that I felt exactly the same feeling after the Lakers stole Game 6 from the SacKings several seasons ago. There was always suspicion that game was rigged: we found out that was the case indeed after the ref went to prison.
