As much as I hate to admit this after almost seven years, but LiveJournal appears to be a sinking ship. Many of you (the ones NOT reading this) have moved over to FaceBook ( Read more... )

If you haven't already done so, please friend me over on FB: www.facebook.com/cahwyguy . My public LJ posts should be appearing over their either as notes or via friendfeed. I tend to write longer pieces that don't work well for FB status updates. You might consider doing something similar -- it's not hard to set up your Notes on FB to be an RSS feed of your LJ, and then you can use the LJ editor to write your posts and then feed both communities.

Despite the fact that my friendslist has devolved into twitter updates, I'm not going anywhere. I don't like Facebook at all. If I ever do go anywhere, I'll migrate to Dreamwidth...but only if I absolutely have to.

I'm on both FB and LJ. On FB, what I see in the news stream is either people posting articles or pictures, short status updates, or quizzes. None of this works well for me, who tends to write mid-size or longer-form pieces.

What I've been doing is using FB to find the friends who are out there. I'll occasionally post status updates (but not from work -- I don't think that's appropriate). I write the longer form pieces on LJ, and they post on FB through RSS to their Notes application. That only gets the public posts -- I'm still thinking about how I want more private things to work, but I may need to end up posting to both places, so I can set the notes privacy appropriately.

I do have a Dreamwidth account (same user name on LJ, DW, FB, and MyS: cahwyguy), but rarely use it. It is more backup in case LJ goes under or starts to sink more.

LJ just isn't the hot place for the teens, but for established communities of people, it seems stable.

You've certainly made a good point: the quick posts can be on Twitter or FB, but the longer, more thoughful posts can remain here on LJ with a link from FB. Certainly worth considering.

LJ, at least currently, gives some better measures of privacy as well. Supposedly the new FB controls will permit that as well, but it is unclear to what extent all the various applications will have access to your private posts. How much of that is a concern really depends on how many "friends-only" or custom group posts you do. Remember that FB's success depends on you sharing your data; LJ doesn't. Now maybe your reading and movie patterns are considered personal to you, but then again, folks have sued to keep their video rental history private.
