This includes minor spoilers for the 2010 animated film The Illusionist.
Yesterday I was talking to Harry and she was telling me about magic and about this prompt with Sherlock being a magician and then showed me some magic trick videos, including
this incredibly beautiful trick. I then told her that it reminded me of The Illusionist, this fabulous (albeit quite upsetting) animated French film that I saw two months ago at the movie theater on my college campus.
Because we were also talking about Sherlock and fanfiction at the time I thought if I took the plot of The Illusionist literally then I don't believe that it would come across very well using the characters Sherlock and John. But then I began to imagine a story using bits and pieces of the film, but not taking the film as concrete - and that, well that could work out quite nicely.
In my mind though it would be John instead of Sherlock who would be the illusionist, which definitely would make things different. I imagine John's post-war mindset (which I certainly was able to feel in just the couple of minutes of A Study in Pink) is closer than Sherlock's to that of Tatischeff. The character of Alice on the other hand, which I could see in some twisted sense being Sherlock - but it would definitely depart from who Alice is supposed to represent in the film, especially because John/Sherlock is endgame for me so there you have it.
The ending also wouldn't be very happy. You know how it goes, Sherlock is ultimately married to his work.
I can't say that these ideas will become anything, but it's eating at my brain and I planned out in my head before I went to sleep last night and today while in the shower how it would all work out.
