Speaking of startling, my parent's 30th is this coming April. They had my sister after 4 years of marriage, and me after 8. They're both coming up on age 60 in the next few years, although my Dad looks maybe late 40s and my Mom hardly over 35. It's weird to think about, because I hardly feel 21, and 22 is coming up, and I'm TOTALLY weirded out by the fact that my sister is almost 26.

What happened? Where did the last two decades go?

i was looking at my mum's hands the other day. she's fifty-three and a teacher. she looks like she's in her forties, easily. but her hands don't lie. they're worn and wrinkled. although they're soft, you can see where the nails are weathered and tired, where the creases between her knuckles forget to unfold, where the liver spots and flaky skin is going to start appearing in the next decade or so. i was watching her stir some polenta and it was like i was seeing this old woman working alone in her kitchen and it was a little scary. she's not the healthiest person in the world - if she dies at 75, i'm only going to know her another 20 years. that means i've known her now for half as long as i ever will.

/ end maudlin.
