Ukyo ficlet: An Act of Charity

Note:  I wrote this fic last year.  So it's obviously not meant to be a commentary on anything that's in the news right now ;-)  Anyway, this isn't quite meant to be a regular story. It's more like my notes on Ukyo's backstory for AoaA:
An Act of Charity )

samurai 7, ukyo

So much epic. Just...I really, really like this backstory. A boy with no particular attachments to people, with no people who are particularly attached to him, grows up to be, well, Ukyo. His learning to flatter people so as not to jeopardize his own standing also fits really well; in the earliest S7 episodes, he's clearly a bit scared to go against his father (of course, then he offs the envoy...). Interesting thing: we seem to have, separately, come up with similar backstories for him. 'Cept Kotone isn't as self-absorbed as Ofuyu (and also there is an Akemi).

Re. your Ukyo dilemma: You should have more of him! We really never learn his motivations, although we can guess a bit. It'd be really interesting to see them fleshed out. And Ukyo stuff is never "sidetracking."

We have very different interpretations of Ukyo (I don't quite see him as a 'redeemable' person or likable character) so I previously doubted if you'd enjoy my story ;-) I thought the best I could do for you is to inspire you to say "Aaargh! I hate this Ukyo story! I'm SO going to write one that I like better ( ... )

Kotone was a little self-absorbed, a little shallow, but she took Ukyo in out of a genuine desire to help the boy she found wandering the road. Also unlike Ofuyu, she did actually make an effort to find Ukyo's parents--sadly, my Ukyo was so intensely traumatized by his village's destruction that he could barely remember anything, making finding his folks kind of hard. It was Ayamaro (who wanted a male heir and found Ukyo suited his purpose well) that didn't really want Ukyo's family found. Over time, Ukyo forgot about his village entirely, save for in his nightmares ( ... )

Yes, I've seen your updated fic. It feels more polished than the old version. Since there are substantial changes, maybe you should just delete the old chapters from ff.net and upload the new ones?
