V-Day Problem

For three year Mao has gotten (and handmade) chocolates and given them to Jun but Shota, Shun and Ton Ton could say the same thing. In a sense those chocolates were obligatory ones; given from a female to her male co-stars; given because they all had work on Valentine’s Day. However, this year was going to be different. Very different.

It was the first Valentine’s Day where Mao wouldn’t be working and therefore would not be with her former co-stars (namely a Mr. Matsumoto Jun). That wasn’t her only problem though; there were plenty of things for her to worry about. What kind how chocolate do you give someone who, once, received chocolates from all the girls in his class? And that was before he was famous! Now that he’s a famous super idol, he probably gets truckloads of chocolate. Mao needed the perfect chocolates that would stand out from all the rest and that would convey what she felt for him.

Mao spent days running around all kinds of stores looking for the perfect chocolate and everywhere she went, there was a billboard of Jun, advertising for Pepsi or AU phones. It was almost like he was watching over her. Mao had no time to worry about that; there were so many different types of chocolate to choose from! White chocolate, milk, dark, 60%, 70%, 99%...with caramel, mints、 nuts, raisins… Why were there so many? It was hard enough already without having to think how many percent of cocoa should be in the chocolate! For the first time in 22 years of Mao’s life, she resented the various types of treats.

Finally she decided that making her own would be the best. She bought one bar of all the types of chocolate that was available and headed home. Tomorrow was the 13th of February; Mao planned to spend the whole day designing her gift and give it to Jun at night. She decided against the idea of giving it to him on the 14th, this was going to be a surprise!

The next day, after successfully asking Jun to come over to her place so he could borrow a few books from her, Mao started to work in the kitchen. After a few hours, she made hearts using white chocolate, using milk chocolate she made balls (dusted with cocoa powder). All she had to do was turn the dark chocolate into buttons, wrap them up and she was done. For the first time in a while she felt happy. She tossed a piece of chocolate into her mouth as a reward to herself; but then the doorbell rang.

Was it time already?? She turned towards the direction of the clock; 10:30 pm the exact time that they said that they would meet. ‘Ok stay calm Mao.’ She coached herself.

She rushed to the door and yanked it open. Matsumoto Jun stood there in faded jeans, tucked into grey and black boots and a black wool jacket. His sunglasses were tucked into his white t-shirt. Mao gulped; the billboards really don’t do Jun any justice. He looked gorgeous just standing there in the halls. He was the epitome of every good feature. He was beauty, strength, coolness all mixed together.

“Yo!” he greeted. Somehow Mao’s mouth stopped functioning properly. “Yeah uh…hi…come in.” she said incoherently.

“Are you ok?” He asked a little concerned at her inability to articulate.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Mao said giving him a smile. Jun strode into her apartment and sniffed the air. Instead of the usual smell of strawberries and fresh flowers that Jun associated with Mao’s home, there was a heavenly smell on chocolate that was coming from her kitchen.

“It smells really good.” Jun commented. Although he didn’t show it in any way, Jun’s tension was rising; a reaction that Jun has when he knows that gourmet food is around. Mao almost sighed; Jun’s palette was very sharp and could be hard to please but he might like her chocolates after all.

“I’m making chocolate.”

“Oh, for Valentine’s Day?”

Mao nodded, suddenly becoming a little shy.

“Are you making them for anyone special?” Jun asked nonchalantly.

Mao hesitated before answering. Her quick wits were about to save her. He could have Jun try them and have him say which one he liked best.

“You could say that.” She finally said. “Come help me choose which one is best.” Jun followed Mao into the kitchen. Her kitchen was in a delightful chocolaty mess. Every surface had a tray of cooling chocolate or melted chocolate.

“So…uh… what’s this special someone like?” Jun asked cautiously while surveying his surrounding. Mao blushed. Should she say?

“He is…” She started slowly, she thought of all the things she liked about him. “…smart and very sophisticated. He’s funny but also very serious…” Mao couldn’t look at Jun so she just looked into empty space. The more Mao described him the more she thought that he was perfect. “He’s cold sometimes but also very kind and gentle.”

Jun stared intently at Mao as she was describing this mystery guy. Her eyes glazed over like her mind had wandered somewhere else. Anyone could tell that she was really in love with this guy, feelings like jealous started to rise with in him but he spotted something at the corner of his eye and smirked before putting on a neutral face again.

“Sounds like a great guy.”

“He is.” She gushed, broken from her thoughts of the very man that was in her kitchen. How silly to be thinking so deeply about him when he was right there. She cleared her throat. “Anyways, help me decide which ones I should give…uh… him.”

Jun was a good sport and decided to play along with Mao. He tried a piece of each chocolate that she made. After each bite he would think about it carefully. To be honest they were all very good. The anticipation to Jun’s reaction, or lack of, was doing horrendous things to her nerves. Her hands were turning cold.

“What do you think?” She said eagerly. “Which one do you li-think he’ll like?” she amended. She almost slipped there but thankfully Jun was fully concentrated on the taste which was another trait that she liked; he always gave his all.

“Hmm. They’re all really good.” Jun said. Mao could almost collapse in relief. “But...” Mao’s smile dropped like dead flies. There was a ‘But?’ “There might be another type of chocolate that he’ll like.” Mao was horrified, how could that be possible? Every available chocolate in Japan was in her kitchen! Did he want some sort of imported chocolate??? Mao started to feel frustrated; this was so unfair!

Jun walked closer to Mao, close enough that Mao could smell what cologne he was wearing. Oh he smelt so good. Mao unconsciously took a deep breath. She regained as much composure as she could. With a voice void of emotions she asked, “What other kind of chocolate?”

Jun didn’t answer. Mao looked into his soulful brown eyes. He picked up a piece of chocolate and placed it in her mouth. The delicious confection was slowly melting in her mouth. Jun leaned in even closer as if telling her a secret. Their faces were centimeters apart now. “Chocolate…kisses.” He said before touching her lips with his. Mao gasped in surprise, giving him complete access to her mouth. His tongue explored every crevice of her mouth. As expected Jun was a very good kisser and the chocolate did nothing to hide the taste of Jun. He was right it was a lot better than any chocolate. Her senses were filled with him. Mao let out an involuntary moan when Jun pulled finally pulled away. She opened her eyes and licked her lips; she could still taste him.

“Wow…” She said. Jun grinned smugly. Mao’s head cleared a little before she realized the position that they were in. Somehow, she wounded up in Jun’s arms; his arms were around her waist and her hands were on his chest. Wait a minute…

“How did you know?” She asked in surprise. She tried to push away from him but he held onto her even tighter. Jun smirked.

“I saw the card over there…with my name on it” He explained nodding to his right. Mao groaned; how careless of her! She buried her face into his chest. Jun laughed and patted her head. “Everything turned out great didn’t it?” Mao looked at him again and smiled shyly. “Yeah, it did. “

“This has been the best Valentine’s Day present I’ve ever had.” Jun said. Mao beamed in delight and giggle.

“Happy Valentine’s Day!” She said.
