CHARACTER INFORMATION:

Full Name:  Lena Cosimo
Race:  Belief-influenced (as of mid-December '11) Human
If Other, provide a description of how they differ from humans: With the onset of enhanced Belief, enough people already Believed that she was actually a siren to turn her into one partially.  But not really.  She has gained a particular affinity for birds and the ocean.  She has become unreally beautiful, as has her voice.  Also, she's begun to get strong, overpowering compulsions to drown things when she's ovulating.  That, or she really, really needs to hurt something.  Though, as in Orpheus's encounter with sirens, music more beautiful than her singing will calm her down.  Which is... not readily available.

These things coupled with her innate charm and manipulativeness are pretty damn scary.  But she's pretty much a human.  No matter how lovely she or her voice is, you will not feel any supernatural compulsions; no matter how much she loves birds she will not turn into one.  (Though she looks almost birdlike when angered. Creepily enough.)  She also remains particularly fragile for a human - girl cannot carry anything more than maybe a fourth, maybe even an eighth of her weight.
Occupation:  Golden Hour Neophyte, poisons specialist
Faction, if applicable: Herself The Cosimos The Golden Hour
Reputation & rumors:  She is known for being elusive and unavailable, yet sought after and admired by many.  Her beauty, wit, and skill with poisons are all she has allowed the public to see much of.  Unfortunately, one can never cover all one's bases.  The rumors about her are as follows:
  • she's a prostitute on the side
  • she'll do anything for a good roll in the hay
  • she'll do anything for her destitute family
  • she's a consummate gambler
  • she's actually a siren
  • she secretly lusts after her elder brother
  • she poisoned all the men who're after her
  • she was responsible for a problem with the water a while back ("Please.")

History:  As the youngest child of the Cosimo family, Lena should have been the happily doted on darling of the family. Except she wasn't. Though she'd enjoyed the life of luxury for a while, the Cosimos' paradisiacal lifestyle was eventually ripped to shreds by her father's propensity for gambling and eventual death. Lena didn't take well to the resulting downward spiral. The once spoiled little girl clung to her mother and siblings like anything, for they were the only constants she had left.

She was thus heartbroken when her precious big brother decided to rob them of the little they had left.  Refusing to acknowledge the emotional backlash of his actions, she capitalized on the material side of his abandoning them.  They were not wearing second-hand dresses for the rest of their lives; money would be earned by hook or by crook.  Having always had an interest in the human body, Lena chose to enter the Golden Hour at 14, only a handful of months before her elder twin, Lucia.

Lena found herself apprenticing an Adept working directly under Magister Balghram.  It was under this Adept's guidance that her talent for healing flourished.  But, alas, healing would not be her true passion.  While brewing an antidote for a poisoned Other, Lena found herself drawn to the attributes of the poison.  This mild curiosity has since expanded into a near obsession with poisons and their antidotes but mostly just the poisons.  She has fostered an extensive and modern knowledge of poisons, chemicals, and other substances.  In this vein, she is almost unsurpassed.  However, her impatience with the scientific method and process of getting published has impeded her progress.  As a result, she still has not finished the paper that would qualify her for being an Adept.  Despite this lackadaisical approach to science, she has great ambitions of becoming the next Magistra Balghram.  And would gladly rip her opponents apart piece by piece.

So absorbed in her blooming career, Lena almost did not notice when her elder sister, Dee, relocated their errant eldest brother.  While she had grown to resent him as her twin sister had, her resentment was greatly curtailed by the tender affection Elia showed her earlier on in life.  Lena is perhaps the most forgiving towards her brother, and he is likely the only man she would ever willingly submit to.

Personality:  Lena is greatly affected by the lack of a true fatherly figure in her life.  As the youngest, she felt it her due to be adored and pampered.  But the hardships the family was going through did not allow for such treatment, and consequently Lena did not feel her existence was of any note to her father or her elder brothers (beyond yet another mouth to feed).  She therefore chose to seek such affection elsewhere.  Lena loves to be at the center of a man's attention and has mastered a great number of ways of doing so.  But, again we return to her family, she felt greatly betrayed by her father's and brother's actions.  The perceived betrayal has left its mark - Lena refuses to be put under the dominion of any man.  Ever.  She will flirt and flutter her way into a man's heart, but will have no qualms about leaving him to bite the dust if she feels like she's giving more arm than inch.

Another carry-over from Lena's lost childhood fantasies is an enduring vanity and materialism.  Self-serving and mercenary, she deserves only the finest and the most beautiful.  Interestingly, Lena's female family members are an extension of her idea of 'self'.  She was extremely embittered by the humiliation their penuriousness 'awarded' them, and it was in part owing to this shallowness that Lena immediately joined the Hour.

In temperament, Lena is a blend of her beloved elder sisters.  Having played witness to Dee's explosive brashness and Lucia's somewhat ineffectual blustering, she attempts a middleground: a blunt sarcasm and highhandedness that can grate on the nerves of whoever dares to cross her.  Lena is definitely not a wallflower and insists on having the final say.  A true Machiavellian, she has no qualms with being the two-faced bitch if the situation merits it.  Ambitious and cunning, she doesn't care how many toes she steps on if she achieves the greater good, the end totally justifying the means.  (However, with Lena, the greater good is painfully relative, with herself and her family taking topmost priority.)

The thing with Lena is that she does not see her flaws as flaws.  She strongly holds onto her tortured martyr self-image, and she can violently rationalize her actions with surprisingly good but ultimately sophistic logic.

That is not to say Lena does not have her good traits.  When she isn't angered, Lena is extremely suave and witty, often a great partner for some old fashioned repartee.   She is a gracious hostess with impeccable manners, somehow knowing how to maneuver herself even around the nobility.  (Again, a vestige of her early delusions.)  This graceful facade is easily demolished when around her sisters, particularly her twin, who is more often than not her sole confidant.  With them, she has no grip on dissembling or perfidy.  The painful sincerity she exhibits around them does not bother her as much as it probably should.

Lena is an utter sponge towards the things she is passionate about.  Namely, boys, balls, and books.  The former two having already been discussed, we turn to the last.  A reader and an autodidact, Lena's self-education perhaps matches that of a noblewoman.  Innately intelligent, she is good with most topics she chooses to investigate.  But her impatience does not allow her to fully master anything, barring poisons, and her successes are mostly owed to her cunning rather than her intellect.  This is something she constantly struggles with and must soon overcome if she is to fulfill her ambitions.

Lena is very much sympathetic to the plight of the less fortunate and tends to be very generous towards those in need.  (Unless, of course, they get in the way of her own goals.  Which has never really happened, but it needs saying.)   She is very reliable to the people she considers deserving and is enduringly loyal to those who have earned her trust.  Her family in particular will find her extremely attentive and occasionally paranoid.  The slightest wheeze will result in a terrible influx of medicine, and a slight breeze will effect an army of candles and blankets.

While at her core a genuinely kind and good person, Lena is more grounded in her insecurities than in her actual nature.  She cannot let go of her feelings of being cheated, yet at the same time cannot help but feel that she is inadequate.  Thus, she will reach higher and higher, stepping on whomever she has to to attain her goals.  However, she has not forgotten the lost girl within her, and is genuinely loyal and steadfast to the people who merit it.

Appearance:  To her chagrin, Lena exhibits the characteristic vertical deficiency of the Cosimo females.  But unlike her sisters, she has opted to nurture what her mother gave her.  She is stunningly beautiful and does whatever it takes to maintain that.  Even when forced to wear shabby clothing, she somehow looks impeccable and polished.  She is rarely ever haggard, and her philosophy is "the more stressed you are, the prettier you should look".  Since joining the Hour and earning her own money, she has become more fashion forward.  She is conscious to be wearing the perfect cut and colors and hates to be upstaged by anyone.  Her usual smile is sultry and contrived (so much so that its artifice is not evident), but her genuine grin is wide and unmitigated, lending a more innocent aspect to her features.
