Joonmyun sighs when his phone beeps again, alerting him of a new message. He doesn’t even have to look at the screen to know that it’s from his not-so-secret “secret admirer”.

It was cute in the first week to receive random texts asking him how his day was or if he wanted to talk or hang out. When he opened his phone in the middle of the cafeteria and saw this one person who he tried to avoid no matter the circumstances that happen to him, he stopped thinking they were cute.

"Come on, Joonmyun," Luhan scolds. "Stop leading Yifan on. If you don’t like him, just say no and he’ll leave you alone."

"Isn’t ignoring his existence enough for him?"

Luhan rolls his eyes. “For those who are really interested in the person, giving up isn’t an option unless the person cuts the rope.”

Joonmyun huffs at him. “He should’ve gotten the hint when I threw my drink on him last week.”

"You know what, Joonmyun? Just give the guy a chance. The fact that you’ve made this courtship thing last for a month means that you’re even the slightest bit interested. What did he say this time anyway?”

Joonmyun opens his phone and checks his messages. I’m hoping you’re free tomorrow. It’s the last day of the bayside park and I really want to spend it with you.

If you want to, of course.

He always ended his texts with that, as if he’s always giving Joonmyun the choice. And he would be lying if he said that it wasn’t charming.

“Amusement park, huh?” Luhan surprises him by mumbling from behind. “I suggest you go on this one. It is the last day of the park, and you wouldn’t want to miss it.”

“Fine.” Joonmyun steels himself once more. “Fine.”

Yeah alright I’ll see you there. Meet you at the entrance by 2?

Joonmyun tries not to seethe when he sees Wu Yifan, captain of the basketball team, #1 most popular guy of their school, waiting underneath the banner of the park. He looks around for anyone from their school. He wouldn’t want news to go around saying the student council president was out on a date with the captain.

“Hello,” Yifan breathes out when he sees Joonmyun. As much as he hates to admit it, Yifan looks good even outside of his school uniform.

“Let’s go?” Joonmyun tries not to look at Yifan’s outstretched hand, at the little indicators of nervousness that seem to surround Yifan, at the blush on the taller guy’s cheeks. (He also tries not to think of the blush on his own face, of the hammering of his heart as he nods and starts walking around with Yifan.)

The day is much more fun than what Joonmyun expected.

Yifan is a gentleman, different from the cold and smug personality that Joonmyun expected. He’s actually the exact opposite of everything Joonmyun thought about him; a lot more awkward (and a lot cuter but no! he is not going to admit to that.)

He plays games like a little kid in a big body, smiles like he’s never been happier when he wins a toy. Joonmyun blushes fiercely when Yifan gives him the large teddy bear, clutching at its soft paw when he couldn’t handle the knowing look on the game manager’s face.

It’s nearly 7 at night and the last bell for the ferris wheel rings in Joonmyun’s ear. He can see the apprehension on Yifan’s face as he shifts his weight back and forth.

“Do you want-“

“I’m okay with-“

Yifan chuckles, deep chest voice sending shivers down Joonmyun’s spine. “Do you want to go on it? It’s going to be the last ride until they return in two years.”

Joonmyun looks up at the machine, especially at the highest point of it. “I’m a little embarrassed to say this, but I’m kind of afraid of heights.” (and of getting on a ride where we sit together very closely and stare at the city from up above and of the fact that you’re really really cute when you’re nervous.)

“It’s okay. I’m-I’m a little scared too,” Yifan admits, smiling down on the ground.

He holds Joonmyun’s wrist, both of them blushing. “Come on. You wouldn’t want to miss this.”

They get on one of the seats and Joonmyun can feel his stomach lurching as the thing rocks back and forth into the air slowly. The paw of his teddy bear is proving very useful to calm him down, and he buries his face into its head.

When he feels the soft breeze of the night sky, he opens his eyes and gapes at the city lights. It’s gorgeous. Everything shines brightly and the lights of the cars rush around like endless streaks of light. He looks up and the stars are shining despite the smoke from all over, and he lets out an involuntary “wow”.

When he turns his head to face Yifan, he’s surprised by lips against his, unmoving as he stares in front of him with wide eyes.

Then the lips pull away and Joonmyun is left with intense warmth on his cheeks. He touches his lips. His first kiss, just like that.

“I-I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist after seeing you like that,” Yifan confesses. He’s blushing hard too, palms flat on the space beside him like a disciplinary position.

“I-I…”

“I’m also sorry if it was your first kiss because I…” Yifan bites his bottom lip hard (and Joonmyun, even in his state of shock, finds his anxiety cute).

“It was also mine.”

Joonmyun’s eyes grow even wider, if that was possible.

“I just got carried away and I’m really sorry. I am-“

He’s interrupted by Joonmyun’s hand on his. Joonmyun curls his significantly shorter fingers around his hand, and he uses the other one to touch Yifan’s cheek.

Then he pulls him closer until their lips meet again, this time less stiff and with less noses bumping into each other. Even as Yifan has his hand on the side of Joonmyun’s neck and has the other one still holding Joonmyun’s, even as their warm mouths move against each other’s, even as the blush on their cheeks grow a thousand times darker, the younger boy can’t help but giggle in the middle of it.

“I’m s-sorry, I really am,” Joonmyun manages to say in between his high-pitched giggles. “I really didn’t imagine this to happen. With someone I liked.”

Wu Yifan: captain of the basketball team, #1 most popular guy of their school, and also the guy Joonmyun’s been desperately trying to resist gushing over since he was in middle school.

“Really? I didn’t expect this either.” Yifan chuckles. “We have a lot in common.”

Yifan pecks his cheek. “I’d like to get to know you more.”

SHOCKING NEWS!

The student council president and the captain of the basketball team. ON A DATE.

Find out more on page 8.

Luhan smiles to himself. This is why school newspapers shouldn’t have a gossip column.
