“You’re marrying Gwen!”

Arthur shrugged his shoulders nonchantlly. Kicking a stray pebble across the playground, he gently swayed back and forth on his favourite swing. He’d known Morgana’s idea that they play ‘weddings’ was a huge mistake. The thorn in his side was obsessed with weddings at the moment. Last week it’d been fashion runways and the week before it was being a make up artist. Arthur was still recovering from the trauma of waking up to find his face covered in multi-coloured splatters of powder and revolting sticky stuff on his lips.

Arthur had only agreed to this new venture because Morgana had threatened to tell Uther it’d been him, not the maid, who broke the expensive lamp in his study. The little devil always seemed to have some sort of dirt on him. Arthur really hated having a sort of sister sometimes, especially now.

“You’re marrying Gwen!” Laughing Merlin moved himself back and forth on the other swing, picking up speed and gradually getting higher.

“Shut up!” Arthur grumbled, letting his feet drag in the dirt. Usually he’d be swinging higher than Merlin, because know one should be above him, but he wasn’t in the mood. He wondered if it was too late to bail. Contemplating the idea for a few moments Arthur eventually decided against it. He was a fast runner but Morgana would tell, then she’d pinch him using those deadly nails of hers. ‘Man up’ that’s what his dad would say, so man up he would. Thing was he didn’t really know what it meant.

On the up hand it was only Gwen he was ‘marrying’. Gwen wasn’t bad, actually she was pretty great, you know for a girl. A ghost of a smile crept upon his face as thoughts of his sister’s best friend sprung up in the corners of his memory.

“You’rrrrreeee marrrrryyyinnnnngggg Gweeeeenn!” Speeding past Arthur once more Merlin teased. The wind elongated every high pitched word adding effect to the taunt.

“SHUT UP MERLIN!!”

Little hands curled themselves into fists, whilst small feet stamped on the dirt ground. Merlin unable to control his now hysterical laughter fell to the ground, clutching at his side. His little podgy legs thrashed this way and that as he rolled about giggling. Rolling his eyes at his friend ex-friend at this rate, Arthur hopped off the slightly swaying seat coming to stand over Merlin. He glared down at him before realisation hit. His eyes suddenly glinted with triumph.

“Morgana’s going to kiiiiiiilllll you for getting yourself dirty before the wedding!”

Merlin stopped, his baby blues widening to extraordinary levels. Jumping up as if the floor was made of hot coals he began brushing himself off frantically, much to Arthur’s amusement.

“You’re scared of Morgana!” Arthur taunted as Merlin finished cleaning himself off.

“Yeah wellllll, she’s kinda scary when’s she’s mad,” Merlin made claws out of his hands, gesturing madly in a mimic of an angry Morgana. His impression was so spot on, Arthur couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Besides,” Merlin continued, “you’re scared of her too!”

Arthur’s laughter stopped abruptly and the frustration returned.

“AM NOT!” turning outraged, Arthur folded his arms across his chest, sticking his nose as high into the air as possible.

“ARE TOO! Other wise you wouldn’t be marrying Gwen!” Merlin stuck his tongue out at Arthur. When Arthur swivelled around though, he hastily withdrew it back into the safety of his mouth.

“Nooooooo I’m marrying Gwen cause…..” Arthur hesitated, voice trailing off into nothing. Why was he marrying Gwen? She makes you laugh. Her eyes are so sparkly all the stars in the sky must live in them, when it’s not night time. She gave you her hair ribbon to tie around your arm when you cut it. Her smile makes your stomach do summersaults. Because she makes your heart go all funny. Arthur’s inner voice answered back.

“Cause?” Merlin prompted a mischievous glint in his eyes.

“Just cause.” Arthur shrugged his shoulders in an ‘I can do anything I want’ manner and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“Cause you love her!” Merlin joked poking Arthur in the stomach, voice full of glee. Arthur flinched taking a few steps backwards, backing away from his friend and the idea. Love? In love with Gwen? No. No Way! Love was for girls not under 8 football champions.

“No you stupid head it’s cause, cause,’” Arthur racked his brain for something to say. “cause it’s not like I could marry Morgana, that would be ICKY!”

Merlin raised his eyebrows unimpressed.

“And you want to marry Gwen!”

“I don’t want to marry Gwen, it’s just she’s…she’s…” Arthur trailed off as a sudden image of Gwen’s bright smile came to mind.

“Pretty!” Merlin blurted out as if reading his thoughts. Merlin mouth stretched wide in a victorious grin when Arthur unconsciously began nodding his head. Arthur soon realised what he was doing and protested but it was too late, the damage had been done.

“You think Gwen’s pretty!!” Merlin chanted skipping around Arthur, throwing up imaginary petals barely concealing his joy. Arthur was a little worried the boy was about to wet himself.

“That’s not what I said!”

Merlin didn’t hear him, or chose not to listen.

“Arthur and Gwen sitting in a tree!”

“Mmmmeeerrrrrlin!”

“K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”

“Merlin I’m gonna…”

Arthur never did get a chance to complete his threat for at that moment Morgana appeared, pushing a bashful Gwen along in front. Arthur’s heart skipped a beat as he looked upon his ‘bride’. Morgana had braided Gwen’s hair weaving tons of daisies and a purple flower Arthur didn’t know the name off into the plait. A few curls, that were too short to be pulled back, dangled loosely on either side of her face, framing it perfectly. He had a strong desire to tug at them, or tuck them behind her ears.

In the bright glare of the sun, Gwen’s dark skin seemed to glow against the pastel pink of her sundress. All of a sudden Arthur’s stomach felt queasy and his knees became weak. Gwen’s brown eyes sparked. A soft blush caressed her cheeks, tainting them a light pink. The sight made Arthur’s lips tug upwards in a lop-sided grin.

“Want me to take a picture?” Merlin whispered into his ear. Not taking his eyes off Gwen who smiled shyly, ducking her head and blushing more profoundly under his gaze, Arthur eyes softened. Yeah Merlin, Arthur thought, take a picture.
