As many of you may or may not know, lemmings do not actually commit mass suicide to avoid over-population. Apparently, the way this myth got started was from good ole' Disney. My ecology prof. told us that the film crew just herded the poor bastards right off the cliff

technically, and especially in norway, lemmings have jumped off cliffs in order to cross bodies of water in the effort to migrate in search of more food, but it is in no way intentional and is mainly stupidity on the part of the lemmings...who i don't think realize that the ocean is larger than say, a lake. i mean, clearly disney is the devil and they did fake that video, however, lemmings have made dumb mistakes and have killed themselves before...just accidentally and more for the sake of moving to find food than simply reducing the herd's numbers to avoid over-population.

i'm kinda pissed though because i had never even heard this until now...in fact i'm pretty sure prof. wetherwax actually talked about it as factual...and in college no less! i have half a mind to find my notes to confirm this and write him an angry e-mail about his crappy class.
