We have just upgraded to an Outwell Hartford XL. Not tried it out yet but it satisfied my required to have a tent big enough to eat in when (note the lack of if) the weather is rubbish.

My husband used to go camping at Assateague when they were kids. He's been wanting to go but I think it's too primitive for me. I like my flushies and hot showers.

We have a couple of nice Greatland (I think?) tents. One of them has three "rooms" (really just tent flaps that hang in the middle of the tent and are attached at the sides), and that was perfect for when we last camped with Jenna. We put her bed and toys on one side, had the middle for clothes and such, and we slept on the other side. The two outer sides were a bit short for Mark (6'1") but the middle part was fine. It also has a place to hang your lantern (not the propane one - a battery operated one), which is nice with kids.

Another thing I would recommend is to avoid the character or cute kids sleeping bags, and invest in a good, cold weather rated Coleman (or better). In our case, it doesn't matter as much if we're using the trailer, since it can be heated, but now we have all of these sleeping bags that are pretty worthless in terms of "real" camping.

I am so jealous that you are close enough to camp at Assateague!

Just a couple days ago Jeff and I were reminiscing and saying how much we miss our annual trips to Acadia each winter. We went every winter that we lived in Boston...it's so beautiful there!

Oh yeah, and as far as tents, well, I don't know what kind of camping you're looking for (i.e., do you take mattresses and all that kind of stuff? or do you rough it a little more?) but for just plain ol' camping, we love our REI tent. Ours is a backpacking-type tent that folds up super compact. But all we use the tent for is sleeping--I don't have any experience (as an adult) with tents large enough to walk around in or set up mattresses in or anything like that.
