I think there are a lot of things that the mind sort of "makes up". I know one time, Matt said he was feeling sick and started to throw up. Assuming he had something contagious, I started to have an upset stomach as well. Turns out he had a beer while taking antibiotics (a no-no that he had forgotten about). But on the other hand, there are some real legit pains and illness. Some, you can try to overcome by ignoring, others not so much.

you can slow down your heartbeat intentionally, and "freaking out" with a racing heartbeat is less healthy than calming down. you can get yourself sick by worrying, but that is not the same sickness as catching a virus from someone else. you can become nauseous just by thinking of something, and you can throw up after watching someone else throw up. there are many variables and the mind is definitely an active agent in the process.
