What it is, is a gunshot wound, relatively close range, behind the ear. The victim was probably involved in organized crime, or else pissed off an organization that performs executions in a similar method. It's an entrance wound. What's noted in the photo as stippling/tattooing are burns left in the skin from super-hot particles of gunpowder, left behind because of the range. It vaporizes pretty quickly after a shot is fired, and it doesn't travel far, so it's always a good hint to range. It's not contact, however, or there'd be a lot of black and the gasses from the barrel probably would've left a mark that looks like a star. The wound would also be smaller. While it's hard to tell without seeing an exit wound, if there was one, I would guess small calibre. (For worst damage with a headshot - short of a shotgun - you want to use rounds that are soft and relatively low-velocity. It'll penetrate the skull but won't have enough force or speed to blow out the other side, so it'll just rattle around inside and fuck up the brain ( ... )
