An almost metallic smell clings to him - the tang of blood, she realizes, coupled with grime and sweat and salt, but she pushes her face into the crook of his neck and thinks it is the sweetest thing she has ever smelt.

"You're safe now," Robb assures her and Sansa swallows the lump in her throat, and wonders when the brother she used to toddle after became a knight, became a king.

Seriously all I want in life (THAT IS STILL POSSIBLE, AT LEAST, I WANT MANY OTHER THINGS THAT NO LONGER ARE BECAUSE GRRM IS AWFUL AND CRUEL) is for Sansa to be Queen in the North and Arya to be her Lady Commander. I WANT SISTERLY-NESS.

Also I have not forgotten about your mercenary!Ned AU, I have just decided to wait until I finish my exchange fics (one submitted already, one being beta read, one in progress still and due next Friday) because I AM SO SURE IT IS GOING TO BE ANOTHER 5,000 WORD MONSTER. BECAUSE YOOOOOOOOU.

(It would be so much simpler if Ned wasn't so FUCKING HONORABLE and therefore I didn't have to write all this backstory and angst before he GETS HIS SEXY TIMES ON.)

Benjen/Cat - After Ned dies in Robert's Rebellion, Cat marries the youngest Stark brother.

She knows she should make more of an effort, that her lord husband is good and kind, that he loves Robb near as fiercely as she does. Benjen Stark is a rare sort of man, a third son who never thought to inherit and has little interest in ambition, and so Catelyn knows that he would never try and seize his nephew's inheritance during his long minority. But she is twenty and already so weary - she could have loved Brandon, with his wicked smiling eyes and boisterous laugh; she could have loved Ned, with his gentle hands and serious face; but loss has beaten her down so that she has nothing left now.

How did I know you would turn this into an angst fest? It's great and also plausible. While I can imagine Cat powering through another death and finding happiness with Benjen, I can also imagine her closing off in the face of repeated losses. I especially like the bits about how she could have loved Brandon and Ned for rather different qualities. Thanks!

Lol, well, c'mon now - the prompt was NED DIES! Of course it's going to be an angst fest! ;-) I don't know. From what we see of Cat in canon, she can power through death and get what needs to be done, done, but she's not good with the emotional-recovery aspect. I think being passed off to a THIRD Stark brother would have been a lot to deal with, no matter how awesome he is (girl's gonna start thinking she's cursed!). But I could see it working out down the line, which is why I didn't put that she COULDN'T love him - it would just take take a looooong time. =)

Robb & Cat--they do not die at the Red Wedding, but both are wounded and held hostage to Walder Frey (and awaiting word from Tywin Lannister as to what should be done with their lives).

They leave him chained in the dark, the crown shoved back upon his head in mock. Robb does not know how many of his men lived and how many died, if Jeyne is safe, where they are keeping his mother (he knows what they did to Grey Wind, and it makes him want to kill and weep all at once). The throbbing in his shattered leg matches the throbbing in his chest, vengeance vengeance the north remembers.

Hahaha perhaps sometime down the line, because I don't knoooooow! I just assumed they would never keep them together where they could plot, or have the comfort of the other's company. XD
