A/N: A friend of mine got me hooked on a band called Street Light Manifesto and one of their songs inspired this little drabble of mine. ^^; I kinda want to submit this to the Alter!Series but..I’m chicken ok! -___- But anyway, on with the show!
Note: Masuta is NOT my character. He belongs to the great and wonderful

It would seem that even after all the time and effort he had put into his work, after all the suffering he went through, the turmoil, the loss, the failures and new beginnings...
Edward Elric was finally giving up.
After what seemed like fifty years, it was just all too much. He just couldn't find the answer. Without alchemy, he was completely useless really, other then when it came to book sense. So many theories and so many 'maybes' or 'what ifs'...all of them leading nowhere. He hadn't found a new lead in weeks. None of the books his father had found for him told him anything. They were nothing more but useless ramblings.
Now, in the dark library of the home he shared with his father Hohenheim and Masuta Ichiro, Edward sat by the light of a candle, and stared down blankly at the notes he had written over these long years.
I'll never get home.
It was the only thought to run through his head. Oh yes, he still had his memories of home, of his little brother, of Winry, of the military crew...But it just wasn't the same.
I should be happy though. I know Al is all right, his body is back, that much I do know. Everyone is safe and..happy...
Sliding his hand into his hair, the blonde sighed heavily, eyes closing. Everything was finally catching up to him. It seemed that without alchemy, he truely was stuck in this place. The flash outside startled the former alchemist, his golden eyes glancing towards the window. Rain was steadily falling, as it usually did in this place.
So different from home...
He would give anything to be able to spar with Alphonse, or even to hear Winry scream at him for another stupid act he had done. In this unfamiliar world, unfamiliar even after all this time, he felt so alone.
"Mr. Elric?" Edward startled, turning in his chair to face the man in the doorway, hand falling from his hair.
"Yes Masuta?" he murmured in reply, his tone dead, just as he felt like inside.
The Japanese man scowled slowly, glancing at the mass of papers and books on the table, then to the blonde.
"I figured you would be working. Everything alright?"
"It's pointless."
For a moment, only the sound of the rainfall outside kept silence from filling the room.
For only that moment.
"Pointless? But, I thought you wanted to get home? You're very close, Mr. Elric, if you just keep.."
"I give up!" Ed snapped finally, rubbing his eyes, shoulders hunched as he leaned over the table.
Masuta stopped mid-question, blinking a few times.
"I'm tired and...I guess I've just realized that it’s pointless to dream about something that will never happen. My life is here now..there's nothing else to it. There are no connections anywhere! There doesn't seem to be any way to get to the gate without alchemy. meaning that everything I've been reading and studying is just useless!" he finished, hands dropping as he looked at the dark haired man in the doorway, and prepared to ask him to leave.
A moment later Masuta Ichiro was showing Edward just how similiar he and Roy Mustang really were.
"I never expected to hear you, of all people, say those words..."
"...Fullmetal. So let me get this straight. You're just going to stand aside and let everything and everyone rush by and not give a damn about anything that happens? You were always going on about your goal, how you had to right your wrongs and fix your sins. And now you're just giving up?" Roy ranted, staring down at the alchemist before him. Hands dropping onto the blonde's shoulders, the Colonel glared down at the Full Metal Alchemist, almost looking ashamed of him it seemed. "You've come so far Fullmetal..Edward. Why stop now? You give up now, and you loose everything." Edward started to say something but the Colonel shook his head, stopping him. "You'll loose everything you have gained up until this point. Is that something you really want to do? If you're going to just give up, you may as well call yourself dead. Your goal, this thing you have been searching for all these years..giving up on it now would put out the fire inside." As he spoke, Roy touched his hand over Edward's heart, eyes still narrowed but softer now. "Even if you think yourself dead to the world Edward..."
"...its not your time Mr. Elric." Sparring the blonde one last scowl, Masuta turned on his heel and left the room, door slamming behind him.
A few pages of notes fluttered off the table, floating down to the floor. Ed's eyes followed them for a long moment, just staring, before he slipped out of his chair and knelt down, starting to pick them up. He smiled then, faintly and almost sad, but a smile none-the-less. Shaking his head some as he gathered up the last of the scattered notes, Ed straightened, gaze no longer being drawn to the window.
Setting his newly gathered notes on the table, the former alchemist took his seat once again, pulling a stack of books over, and gazing at the titles.
"Left off with Einstein...” he murmured, and with a stronger intent, set to work on solving a much bigger equation then E=Mc2.
