In front of everyone else, they were Fullmetal and Flame. They were those two stubborn soldiers that could never get along, that seemed to hate one another more than anything else in the world.
But in those rare moments when no one else was around, they were Roy and Ed. They were two men with a few years between them but experience made up for that. Their conversations were civil, often emotional. They found in each other a comfort that they couldn't find in anyone else, a comfort that was defined by tragedies that intertwined their lives. Both of them had lost a dear friend by the name of Maes Hughes. Both of them knew what it was like to have something dangled in front of you then taken away without a second thought. Both of them had stood by and watched as someone they cared about was harmed and had been unable to do anything about it.
It was those things that had brought them together, and those things that would keep them that way for many years to come because in all the sadness that surrounded them they had managed to find some sort of happiness; a little piece of something that eased their hearts.
And as they sat together on the older man's couch, the younger silently crying as the weight of the world became too much for him, nothing else seemed to matter but that comfort, that developing love that was beginning to grip them. They allowed themselves to be human for once instead of the indestructible forces they pretended to be at times, allowed themselves to show weakness to someone that ultimately knew exactly what they were feeling.
And really..that was enough.
