I share your feelings about the deception in the public rhetoric, as well as the ghoulish post-mortem photo of Zarqawi.
I have a particular unease with the deception in politics and public rhetoric, because of my experience in politics. Framing issues makes some level of sense, but it's become too self-conscious and I think it back-fires. It becomes condescending and idiotic. I think the fear injected into the conservative rhetoric is like some magic glue. It at once unifies and deceives people. I don't think you can combat fear with "fear of fear" -- which is all we had in the 2004 election (read: fear of Bush). It's derivative and itself ultimately deceptive. It doesn't stick.
