I had an insight this morning regarding historical music versus music composed by living people. I was reading Kerman's essay on Tovey's work on Beethoven. Before Mendelssohn, musicians and especially composers were aware of music that had been written before they lived. Reading some D.H. Lawrence poetry this morning. I like it even though I suspect much of it is bad.
