I just love it when there is so much character consistency on SPN regarding Dean, and at the same time character development.

In season 2 (Houses of the Holy) Dean mentions that he doesn’t believe in God:

There’s no higher power, there’s no God. I mean, there’s just chaos, and violence, and random unpredictable evil th, that comes out of nowhere, and

Oooh, yes. I agree with these thoughts! I know some people like to harp on Show for 'reasons', but the characters really have changed and grown, all while staying true to their own inner core selves.

And given character continuity, it's so right for Sam to go back to praying, just as the opposite is for Dean.
