Yeah, if you go by logic, it is clear that Azazel would have offed Jess anyway so that Sam would have been forced to follow the revenge path, anyway. Dean's presence there was just a co-incidence, in no way or shape was he responsible for Jess's death or the events that followed after. Sam was marked from the start and Dean had no hand/agency in that

There was that one moment with Bobby, when he found out about the deal, where someone was was shown to be irritated that Dean had a low opinion of himself, and later when Cas asked Dean if he didn't believe he deserved to be saved, all puzzled like.
But other than that, sadly it happens more often that he gets to feel resentment.
I would have been nice if they clarified "a while" for us. He didn't know about the visions, but I wonder if he knew about the demon blood. It would stand to reason that he might have found out, but maybe he just didn't know what the end game was, meaning Sam being Lucifer's vessel. I would love it if Show would let us know what John knew and when, but I do doubt we will ever find any of that out. Oh well.
