The Wages of Sin...

So I've moved to California, to the bay area, Silicon Valley to be exact. This is "Furry Mecca" so to speak, ground-zero as the global population center for furry fans. There are somewhere in the 1,000+ range number of furs around the bay, primarily concentrated in Berkley, Fremont and the "Silicon Valley" (South Bay) area which is comprised ( Read more... )

Looking at this the fifth time and still wondering, I have to ask, why have you titled it "...the wages of sin"? Is there some more sinister subtext to this factual reportage?

Because I moved to California to be Californicated. Moved here for sex, money, glamor, "the life", ya know? What religious folk tend to refer to as "sin". I myself am a Secular Humanist with a long background in religious studies, so I like to frame things in faith-based perspectives now and then as a witty sort of dry humor. I have to admit that religions have a certain intrigue and enigmatic, magical J'ne sais quois about them that makes them attractive and alluring, but at the same time I keep a firm grip on reality and confront any belief with skepticism and scrutinizing reason.

You call the Bay Area "furry mecca". You should see it down here in SoCal where furry started. There are also a ton of furs down here and lots of events going on (as long as you are in the OC/LA area). Another place where you might find yourself discouraged or overwhelmed by the sheer density of furries.

I say, never move for anything that is shallow. Usually shallow aspirations (the fame, money) always leave you feeling empty. Besides, if you were secure in yourself sans "those who are better than me" than this move might be showing you that you invested too much of your security in being "the best" at something. Sadly, even if you had not moved to the Bay Area, that kind of "problem" exists, but its more apparent when you knowingly move to an area that is dense in the people whom you gravitate towards.

Overall, its up to you to see worth in yourself. Its not like you can rely on the validation of others for your own existence. Just reach down and "see" it.

I've spent some significant time in the LA area doing work for IBM about 6 years ago, and there was a pronounced LACK of furries and furry groups down there. Yes there were a lot of furs, but they were not really very findable and the only mailing lists I could find for the region were fairly dead at the time. I found maybe 3 or 4 people to hang out with down there, all of whom were pretty much in agreement that the Bay Area was the place to be for furs and LA was an overall deadzone due to the distance between furs and the difficulty in traversing the LA basin. I honestly couldn't name you a single fur in the LA area these days ( ... )
