I would file "indifference" under malice, especially when talking about preparing for a hurricane. Hanlon's Razor says to never assume malice when stupidity is still a possibility. But having the President of our country exhibit a complete absence of executive ability... well, I guess that would go under "stupidity" and that's what I meant by "the alternative".

So yeah -- radical, fundamental incompetence is the alternative. It just seems like sometimes Our Dear Leader knows what the public is supposed to see ("Here's where I stand up and boldly state that it's going to be okay") but has no idea what goes on behind the scenes to make leadership happen ("Brownie, I promised America that this would be okay, and so neither of us is sleeping until you prove to me that you've got a plan that isn't going to result in An Entire American City disappearing"). I can't claim to be a better leader than he is, but then again, I never volunteered to run the country.

I always tend to be much more forgiving of stupidity than of malice, but in this case, I find myself just livid at the puppeteers who thought it would be great to launch dubya into office, and slightly less angry, but still pretty mad, at people who voted for him the second time. I wonder if my super-conservative aunt & uncle in Slidell are still the strong Dubya supporters they once were.... I've been meaning to ask, but haven't found a delicate way to.
