agreed tat'JAI HO' didnt deserve an oscar but 'REHMAN' definately did !!
the oscar has may be given him a global platform to do wat he does best , making music.....
so may be here on we might get to enjoy some of his music in movies other than indian.... which is great!!!!!
think all the musicians globally will now on.. try and match up or do better than him so.... think the future awaits better musicians and music .

For the question 'Does it require an oscar to assert his ability'.. philosophically no. commercially yes.
Oscar has become a benchmark. If Rahman's got it, he's benchmarked at a level.

I think its not about west recognizing him and really to feel great about them, its about winning among the many.
