I say send them a polite email (that barely covers up your anger) saying you are rather sure you did actually pay for it and blah blah. I mean, what they're doing is just not legal.

Not that that matters. You WILL get your domain back--or at least something of equal weight in compensation. Like a new domain with a different name or something.
