Nadine Lewis considered the letter she’d received.
Doctor Jonathan Crane had unnerved her the times she’d spoken with him, of course. She was sure he could unnerve almost anyone. Perhaps not Mr. Falcone, but nothing ruffled Mr. Falcone. The letter from Dr. Crane, though, was something else entirely.
Granted, it made her think. She knew some of her fears, yes-dogs, the dark, and small, enclosed spaces all frightened her. However, he mentioned fears deeper than that, fears beyond the physical. She reread the letter.
Fear of control? Perhaps. Nadine wouldn’t consider it severe, though. She didn’t want to feel tied down, feel trapped, but she hardly felt like she was afraid of it.
Fear of being attacked? Of course. This was Gotham. There was a constant threat that someone would decide she’d make a good target. However, Mr. Falcone did a good job of making her feel safe.
Fear of being alone? Now, that made Nadine stop. If she were to be honest-truly and completely honest-she’d admit to that. She was afraid to be alone. She didn’t mind living alone, no, or working by herself when the time came, but that wasn’t the fear. She was afraid of ending up alone, of having no one to care about her.
Fear of bending to others’ will? No. That didn’t scare her.
Fear of being forgotten or ignored? That hit home. Nothing scared her more. The idea of being insignificant, of being forgotten or abandoned. That frightened her. She made sure to try and prove herself to Mr. Falcone, to try and make sure he couldn’t consider her dispensable.
The idea that Jonathan Crane told her he wouldn’t forget her? That made her pause. Part of her was repulsed. As if she needed someone like him-to borrow a phrase from Mr. Falcone-a freak like him to notice her. She could do much better. She would do much better.
Still, it was a compliment. A repulsive compliment but a compliment nonetheless. To command the attention of such an odd man, of such a genius was an accomplishment, certainly. She wondered how serious he was.
The master of fear wished to discover what she was afraid of? Well, he was certainly welcome to try.
Nadine forced herself to smile as she folded the letter and put it back into the envelope. She wouldn’t allow Jonathan Crane to scare her.
