Dean Winchester plunked down in the shade of the withered cottonwood with a growl of disgust. The Impala had overheated and Sam had gone off to find some water. It wasn't until he was out of sight Dean realized Sam had pick-pocketed his hip flask of Wild Turkey.
He scrubbed a hand through his short hair and huffed. Sam wasn't that good; which meant Dean was not as sharp as he used to be. No, screw that, Sam just had the opportunity while Dean was fussing with his baby's radiator cap and not caring about anything else.
He was getting damn good at lying to himself.
Dean leaned back and watched the shifting shadows through the dry leaves.
Shadows. . .everywhere shadows. . . "Somebody help me!"
An inquisitive whimper startled him. He turned his head to see a puppy sniffing the air just out of reach. It was about the length of Sam's hand; a dusty color with a fluffy ruff, a thin little whip tail and pricked up ears.
"Where did you come from?" he asked. The puppy wagged its tail and came a little closer. He put out his hand and it sniffed it. It grinned at him and rolled over. He could see it was a female.
"Aren't you a cute little puffball?" he chuckled, gently tickling her tummy. "Must be a house somewhere if you're. . ." A sudden movement caught his eye and he turned to see two other pups pulling a plastic bag with the brothers' sandwiches out of the back seat. Dean had left the doors open to try and cool the interior.
"HEY!" He yelled. The pups left the sandwiches and all three scampered into a nearby tumbleweed. "Oh, so that’s it? Puffball is the distraction while Butch and Sundance steal my lunch!" Dean retrieved the bag and got a bottle of water. He unwrapped his sandwich with three pairs of bright eyes watching his every move. "You know," he said to the tumbleweed. "If you asked nice I might just share." He took a bite in front of them.
The second of the pups, marked with black around his face and legs with one droopy ear, came forward and looked up at him with big pleading eyes. It gave a little bark.
"Oh, come on, Butch, you can do better than that."
The third pup, all silvery grey, came out and sat down.
"That's it, Sundance, show him how it's done."
The pup pulled up both forepaws and was rewarded with a scrap of roast beef flicked to him. This brought Puffball out and all three pups were soon sitting up and getting fed. Dean chuckled over their antics and fed them the meat out of Sam's sandwich as well. To his surprise, the pups also ate what he called "the nasty green stuff."
Fed, the pups came over to play. Butch tugged on the sleeve of his jacket and mock growled. Dean flicked him over on his back only to have Puffball go after his bootlaces. Sundance just jumped and danced around all of them. Dean pulled out a rag and had a lively tug-of-war with Butch and Sundance while Puffball yipped encouragement. All three pups then pounced on him and started licking him until he couldn't stop laughing.
He shared the water bottle with them when they started to tucker out. Puffball rested her head on his left thigh while Sundance sprawled on his right. Butch tucked himself in the crook of his arm and Dean rubbed his ears.
"Dean?" He looked up in surprise. Sam was standing with a jug of water in one hand and puzzled look on his face.
"Hey, Sam." Dean grinned. "Found some new friends - this here's Butch. That's Sundance and that cutie is Puffball - watch out, she's the brains of the outfit."
"Dean," Sam kept his voice very soft as if he was afraid of frightening something. "You do know they're coyotes?"
"They are not!" Dean sputtered. He picked up Butch and looked him in the eye. "You're not a coyote, are you?" Butch wiggled out of his hands as Sundance hopped to his feet and Puffball leaped over his thigh. Sam looked in the direction the pups were heading.
Dean turned his head and froze. An adult coyote was standing next to the tumbleweed.
It gave a soft woof and the pups galloped to it. They yipped and squealed as it sniffed them all over. The adult gave Dean a long, thoughtful look before herding the pups away.
Dean stood up slowly. "They were puppies. Just. . .puppies. . ." He looked after them a long moment.
"Dean?"
"Come on." He turned. "Let's get going."
