see, i hate fan fiction. either do something original or don't bother. i can see some value as a writing exercise but i'm as baffled by the culture that has risen around fan fiction as i am by furry culture.
but i also see your point about passive vs imaginative media consumption. with really good tv you can't help but be inspired to imagine. but i don't think that's true of all tv. and i don't think fan fiction is the best outlet for that sort of thing (if it works for you, more power to ya, but don't expect me to read it or give a shit, much like religion). i'm all for role playing games or some other collaborative, imaginative offshoot for a show like firefly. but who'd want to play the jersey shore RPG?
