Pairing: domestic!JongKey
Rating: PG
Genre: tooth-rotting Fluff
Summary:
Kibum comes home to a particular conversation.
A/N: I had the idea for this super randomly and I just had to write it down even though I shouldn’t have, hehe. It's hiatus for real after this! Honestly, I have no clue where this came from, except maybe from
this. The alternative summary is: Because Jonghyun never shuts up.

Kibum turns his key in the lock and sighs in relief when it clicks open; the warmth of his home sounds promising after yet another long week. He toes off his boots in the small entryway and shrugs out of his coat, meanwhile searching for a free hanger in the incredibly cramped closet. He manages to find one pressed against the wall and stuffs his coat inside. He is forcefully attempting to slide the closet door shut when he hears a voice from the kitchen across the hall. It’s too soft for him to make any sense out of it, though, so he quietly moves to the living room and lets his bag fall onto the couch, listening.
He’s closer, now, and suddenly there is a strange gurgling noise from the kitchen. It has a corner of his lips tilting upwards, but what he hears next has them stretching into a smile.
“That’s what I thought, too,” he hears Jonghyun’s smooth voice say, followed by a high-pitched sound. Jonghyun then chuckles lightly, and Kibum’s feet begin to move on their own because hearing is no longer enough - he wants to see.
“I know, it just doesn’t fit with the first verse,” Jonghyun is saying, his back to Kibum as the latter’s head peeks in through the kitchen’s open doorway. “But it could make a nice bridge,” he ponders, left hand hovering in midair while his right is folded beneath his chin.
This time, Jonghyun’s words aren’t answered by any sound, so he carries on and hums a line or two of a melody Kibum has been hearing rather often lately. He sings a few words throughout and his audience, Kibum notices with something akin to a sizzling yet soothing warmth melting his insides, looks at him with big, dark eyes.
The five-month-old baby boy is propped up in his seat on the table, eyes never leaving his father as he sings his latest lyrics. There’s an empty milk bottle by Jonghyun’s elbow and a yellow plastic spoon in his hand. The slow melody comes to an abrupt end and Kibum fears he’s been discovered until Jonghyun speaks up again.
“I’m so stuck,” he sighs at once, his broad shoulders drooping a little and Kibum wishes he could see the other’s face because it has the baby boy giggling.
“Yah,” Jonghyun reproaches playfully, “this isn’t funny.”
The baby’s giggles turn into an indecipherable garble of sounds as his small fingers reach for the plastic spoon when Jonghyun puts it to his mouth. He swallows some of the thick puree and Jonghyun is left to scoop up the remnants dribbling down his chin. Kibum leans into the doorframe; he loves watching them like this.
“Are you still hungry?” Jonghyun asks, as if expecting a coherent answer. All he gets is another string of syllables which he nods to anyway.
“No wonder you grow so fast,” he mumbles lowly. “Makes one of us.”
Kibum holds back a smile and watches Jonghyun spoon-feed their baby again, only this time he’s making airplane sounds and is twirling the spoon in a way that has some of its contents splattering onto the wooden tabletop. Kibum shakes his head fondly.
“You eat so well,” Jonghyun praises him sweetly as he wipes the corner of his small mouth with his thumb before sucking it clean. “I wish finishing that song was as easy,” he adds as an afterthought, still preoccupied. The big-eyed baby blabbers through a mouthful of puree, ending with a gurgle.
“It just…” Jonghyun ponders, resting his cheek on his knuckles, “it has to be perfect, you know?”
He feigns attentively listening to the baby’s continuous babbling, fingers reaching up to tuck the bib back beneath the little boy’s chin.
“You really think so?” Jonghyun asks, seemingly genuine in his tone. Kibum bites his lip because even after all these years, he is still very much in love.
Jonghyun’s question is answered by another string of jumbled sounds. The baby’s big eyes follow the tiny spoon as Jonghyun scoops up more of the liquefied food but doesn’t open his mouth for it.
“No?” Jonghyun tries to feed him again, to no avail. He sticks the spoon in his own mouth instead.
“Not bad,” he mumbles, “I like this flavour.”
To this, Kibum chuckles audibly and it has Jonghyun spinning around on his chair to face him. Kibum has his arms crossed over his chest and is shaking his head at him - Jonghyun grins back sheepishly.
“Hey,” the elder greets him at once, “how long have you been there?”
“A while,” Kibum answers, smile still etched onto his lips.
“We were having a heartfelt conversation,” Jonghyun tells him before licking the back of the small spoon.
Kibum strides up to the table and places a kiss to their child’s forehead before settling into Jonghyun’s lap. He lets the baby boy wrap his hand around his finger as Jonghyun breathes down his neck.
“You’ve finally met someone who talks as much as you,” Kibum teases him, but Jonghyun just smiles and tilts the younger’s head to kiss him, tasting like carrots and apples.
