My rant of the day!

I am denied a job at 3 different places today! Why because I smoke cigarettes! Ok I don’t mind the banding of cigarettes in restaurants. That’s a respect for others type of thing. But now they are going to deny jobs to people who smoke. No that is taking it way too far! I am getting sick and blanking tired of people telling me I can’t smoke, ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear you're having a hard time finding a job... This economy sucks majorly, and having another roadblock put in the way is just adding insult to injury.

I hadn't heard of anybody being denied employment because they smoke before, but if you look at it from the employer's point of view, and squint, you can see how it makes sense to them. Statistically speaking, smokers are less healthy, miss more work, and cost the employer more in health insurance. I'd bet this is especially true of small businesses, who don't have extra employees to cover lost worktime, and often self-insure. It's not you, personally - companies make the decision based on statistics.

If you don't mind, I'll toss my two cents in here. My boss at work was hiring a new clerk for our office. Three gals from within the company applied. He had a choice of two smokers and one non-smoker. He chose the latter because he constantly saw the two smokers outside grabbing smoke breaks because smoking was banned in the building. "I want my clerks at their desks, not outside puffing away," he confidentially told me. He believed "the pull of tobacco" is constantly on smokers' minds; thus they're jonesing for their next cigarette and can't really concentrate on their work.

This is my ex-boss' opinion! I'm not a smoker, either, it gave lung cancer to three members of my family including my mother, so I never took it up.

Love, Robin
