Summary: Oneshot - Nostalgic piece from when Nathan was very little.
The sound of laughter from downstairs was almost too enticing to ignore. With the utmost care not to make a sound, Nathan climbed out of bed. Into the dimly-lit hallway, he looked left and then right before tip-toeing barefoot over the carpeted floor.
In his hand he held a small rubber ball painted in a swirl of bright colors. He had taken it out of the jacks set he had and hidden it under his pillow. With wide eyes he peeked around the banister at the top of the stairs to find the voices louder, but nothing visible.
“I couldn’t believe that he didn’t realize his own faux pas.”
“All joking aside, we can’t play God. All of the good we’ve done would be for nothing.”
“Arthur, it would be the beginning of good. That’s the point you’re missing here. The world is in turmoil. We can-”
“At what cost?
“Yes, at what cost?”
“Kaito…”
Nathan knew these stairs well. He knew where every creak would occur and avoided them as if his life depended on it. First, he saw shoes and then pants legs and skirts. The moment he saw shoulders his mothers’ voice sounded. He squatted down, trying to see the gathering in the den.
Several adults were gathered in the room, some sitting and some pacing the floor. The faces of some of them were familiar, and some were new. He put the ball to his lips, lightly tapping it against the skin there as he waited, not caring or understanding what was said, but hoping to hear what they had been laughing about.
“This is not a decision to be made lightly. He’s still just a child. He’s six.”
“And will eventually lead us all, Angela. The face of our kind.”
“Lead us through a devastation caused by us? It isn’t-“
“Give the idea some thought, that’s all I’m asking. A better world.”
“A better world for some and not for all? What ki-“
Horror was the only way to describe it as the ball hit the floor below and rolled into the den. Horror was what held him in place instead of running and trying to hide that he had been eavesdropping. The sound of whispers wafted from the den and he knew that there was no point in doing anything but awaiting his fate.
Angela stepped out into the foyer and looked up to see her son at the middle of the stairs, gripping the railing tight. “Nathan, you’re supposed to be in bed.”
“Oh, let him come in, Angela.”
She seemed to roll her eyes at the voice from the den and looked back to Nathan. “Whatever are you doing up so late? I tucked you in hours ago.”
“Heard laughing. Can I see what’s funny?” Nathan asked, still gripping the railing tight.
A few chuckles sounded from the den and Angela grinned and shook her head. “Someone simply told a joke.”
Nathan’s eyes lit up. “I know a joke.”
A man with a familiar face stepped from the den and offered a kind smile. “Come here Nathan. We must return your toy at least, mustn’t we?”
“Daniel, it’s late.”
Daniel nodded. “He said he had a joke, Angela. Just a few moments.”
Watching his mother until she gave a soft nod of approval, Nathan’s feet padded quickly down the stairs. He was lifted into the man’s arms and carried into the room filled with adults. One of the men held out the colorful rubber ball and Nathan smiled as he took it back.
“Say thank you to Adam, Nathan.” Angela instructed.
“Thank you.”
A soft smile as Adam replied. “You’re welcome, Nathan.”
“It would seem that Nathan heard laughter and was spying to see what was so funny.” Daniel explained, every word more colorful than necessary. “He says that he has a joke to tell.”
“Let’s hear it.” Another man prompted, puffing on a cigar.
Adam gave him a kind smile. “Go ahead, Nathan.”
Nathan looked around the room, somewhat hesitant before he finally began telling the joke. “What did the grape say when an elephant stepped on it?”
“What did the grape say when an elephant stepped on it…” Daniel repeated the words and looked thoughtful for a few moments before shaking his head. “What did the grape say, Nathan?”
Preemptive giggling was unstoppable when Nathan just thought of the conclusion to the joke. The room erupted in chuckles and smiles with him.
Adam stepped forward, a full grin on his lips. “What did he say, Nathan?”
“Nothing. He let out a little whine.” Nathan answered, exploding into another fit of giggles.
Daniel’s laughter melted into the myriad of amusement in the room. “A leader if I ever saw one.”
