He had decided not to speak until now. Jan had known all afternoon. Aeryn had looked at him across the table for a split-microt and he had known. That distant expression had been in her eyes; the one she got sometimes.
He would not let her waste her life. It was up to him to put a stop to it. Like his father would have done.

He folded his arms across his chest, frowning at the woman he'd come to call a friend. The same woman who had shot him for trying to help her. Jan knew it wouldn't be easy to gain her trust; he hoped he had succeeded. Yet here she was, running away again.
He knew exactly how to make her angry enough to let him explain himself.

Aeryn slung her leg over the Prowler, leaping down from her perch. In less than five microts she was standing in front of him; angrier than she'd ever felt with him before.
"How exactly am I selfish?" Her fists clenched automatically. They expected a fight.
