X2, BABY!

WOOOOOOO!!! Saw X2 last night at 10:15pm PST along with some good friends. Can you believe I had to clamp down on my own lips in order to prevent myself from blabbing about meticulous facts of the X-universe? ;D

Wow, I was impressed. Singer and his crew did a lot of good work, cinematic and effect-wise. The fleshing out of individual characters added to the complexity of "The Mutant Problem" (What problem??) not just from a black-and-white/good-versus-evil standpoint, but on a more conscious and personal level. How would you react if your neighbor brought in his paper every week by standing on his front porch and manipulating the wind just enough to fling the paper into his hand?

And I love how obvious it is that more money in the X2 budget was spent on the furthering of captivating special effects. The opening scene with Nightcrawler porting to and fro in the white house, WOW! I also got a real kick out of Wolverine going feral on one of what would soon be dozens of slaughtered operatives. But honestly, was it really necessary for Logan to carry a child along with him while scoping out someone he intended to leave for dead? Even mutants can be traumatized.

Jason Stryker? I think he was an alteration of an existing (though deceased in the original continuity) X-character, Jason Wyngarde aka Mastermind. But of course, converting the mutant illusionist and former member of the nefarious Hellfire Club into the tortured and invalid son of Stryker fit well enough in the movie.

Oh, and Magneto's escape. I know it was supposed to be climactic and all, but I couldn't stop myself from giggling like crazy when his sneering scowl glared across the screen as he floated away from his plastic prison and towards freedom. The look alone was worth a few laughs.

Geek though I may be ("I'm not a nerd, Bart... nerds are smart."), I really enjoyed this film. Afterwards, Robey and I headed back to Jerry and Micah's place to recover from the experience, and ended up watching the original X-Men movie (How many of you admit you did it too? Huh? ....C'mon, it's not like you can lie about it). In comparing the two, I'd definitely say that each has its shining moments, but in terms of storyline, X2 is more my style. =)
